Q: What's behind the whole 'baaad' driving thing?

Asian drivers seem to have acquired a level of fame for their uniquely poor driving skills that was once reserved exclusively for elderly women and the blind. I'm not interested in the "They just ignrant" type of answer I hear from so many westerners, I want to know the real reason. Is it that cars are still relatively new to roads in Asia and everybody still drives them as they might ride a bicycle? Is it a reflection of an economy that, though climbing rapidly still struggles to provide adequate law enforcement on the roads? Or is they jus' ignrant?

For the same reason they can't wait in line.

"ME FIRST, ME FIRST, ME AND ME ONLY!"

And then the whole face thing that makes them keep on continuing when they start doing something wrong (like driving the wrong way, and then refusing to back up).

One thing that I have noticed is when Chinese people are walking, they do so aimlessly seemingly  like they have got all the time in the world. Not a thought for any other pedestrian that they might be blocking as they weave around the sidewalk. Also the way they spend a vast proportion of their time just lingering in public places.

But put them in charge of a motor vehicle, and suddenly it's like a red rag to a bull. Hand on the horn and fast forward!!!

Mind you, when the police drive clapped out VW Santana's or oversized golf buggies, there's not much chance of them coming first in a car chase with an AUDI A6 or BMW so perhaps the drivers think they can do what they like.

The imaginary- but understandable road rules --- all drivers should know in asia... there is something called road psychology... apply your brain and drive effectively...

just follow rules and drive.. any monkey can do... Wink ... rude?

well i should say... apply european rules on chinese roads and imagine what will happen... it would be long long traffic jams... with this huge amount of cars and pedestrians n bicycles... just rules wont work..

stan118:

dude if people drove properly this will improve traffic flow, not cause traffic.

its all down to the fact nobody cares to resolve this problem

im sure back at home people dont care about each other on the road but we are constantly  told how to drive and have police watching us all the time and it all becomes a habit later like u stop at the red light without thinking about it

Lack of driving experience, lack of rule enforcement (beyond the traffic cameras, which are well known and easily avoided), lack of credibility with the driving certification system (the Chinese driving license can be easily purchased sans testing).  These "lackings" combined with the "cultural" aspects (wait, is that another "lacking"??)  mentioned by Mr Spoon create the perfect storm known as Chinese drivers in China.

As a westerner myself and also a driver here in China, I think I encounter more stupidity than those who travel by taxi.

In my view the main reason for bad driving comes from lack of knowledge, some (not all) obtain their license through 'friends' who are in government and are able to get them a license without taking a test. The other type of bad driver comes from the Chinese way of taking a test 'memorizing', the Chinese do not study for exams by learning they study by memorizing the answers, when I went to take my test I was given a book of 1,500 questions and answers and was told the best way is just memorize the answers rather than learn the rules first (like I did back in the UK), same goes for the practical test as the instructors are teaching the method to pass not the method to drive.

It's a sad situation and results in so many deaths. gory, gruesome, mangled deaths. We are not talking 100 years old, passing on in the nite surrounded by love and comfort. Anybody remember that woman crushed by the cement truck? Her husband sat beside her while she died.  40 minutes they said. Oh, during this time the cement truck was still on top of her.

Well, there has long been the maxim in East Asia. "Life's cheap".

I never understood that. 10 years later, I still don't.

and you don't want to hear what I believe to be the real root reason behind Oriental behavior.
