From simple things like ensuring you get a payslip every month, to getting extra days off. Basically, what's the proceedure? Back home I'd say, 'Hey Boss, you owe me a payslip. Can I have it please?' This doesn't seem to work here.
Well, you can try sucking up to him. Give him compliments, take him out to dinner, give him a gift of some kind, anything that will give him face. Of course, he may not care anyway. But this is the least violent way.

In my experience, this is the only possible way. Socializing gets you bizarrely far in this country, and nothing else seems to get you anywhere.

AQctually,if he does not reciprocate in some way, he loses face. You may not get all you want, but he will give you something depending on how reasonable, easy, etc.
If he is a typical Chinese male (and married), then I would take him to dinner, make sure he gets loaded on the baijiu, head down to the local KTV hostess bar and make sure he hooks up. Slip the girl a few extra moa's to snap some photos when she is with him.
After this you have all the leverage you need, and he will be super nice and do whatever you want.
Until you can gain leverage, he holds all the cards and can do as he likes.
Nice advice, thanks. My boss is a woman...

Doesn't matter. I had a woman boss who thought something was weird if the FTs didn't go to dinner with her about once a month. Nothing romantic.
Fortunatly, I don't have much of a problem with this one. Asking has worked pretty good, and then I usually get what I need. I've never not been paid, and the asking is for extra things for the classroom or the students.
