Q: What's up with Chinese Cheetos?

I mean really...is not the entire premise of Cheetos about CHEESE?

And don't get me started about the whacked out flavors of Lay's chips.

Why do Chinese people hate cheese so freakin much?

I was in Urumqi Carrefour last Saturday, looking for butter and cheese. Carrefour here is not the same as everywhere else in China (Dalian).

I am not sure about 'Chinese hate cheese', but they don't consume it as often as we do, so stores don't carry it.

I compare milk cheese in China with 'dofu' in the West: 'not too many Western stores carry 'dofu'', butt....I want cheese.  Chinese teachers promised me, they'll find store which carry cheese, beside Residence permit extension.

What, you don't like the chicken and beef flavors of Cheetos? Yeah, they're sorely lacking in the "cheese" department, but I'll still eat em from time to time.  The Blueberry Breeze Lays chips are actually pretty good angel

Lays has a "Numb and Spicey" and a "Spicy Hot Pot" which are brilliant, The cucumber one is just strange. I have yet to find a local brand that successfully offered both crispiness AND flavor in the same bag. (and I have tried my share of obscure Chinese snacks as looking at snacks is a big part of what I do when I am helping the wife shop)

MondoRosa:

Brilliant huh? Ok, I'm intrigued. Tomorrow I am going to buy a pack of Numb and Spicy and a pack of Spicy Hot Pot. I've been hurt sooooo many times...but it sounds like you know your crisps.

Scandinavian:

Well, It would be individual taste that is at play, but I don't think you can really say you have been to China before you have tried those two snacks

I often wonder about Chinese taste buds. I bought enough stuff that tasted awful and went in the trash.. Too afraid to try many things, even many cookie things,, ugg. I bought peanuts in the shell and they were sweet. Cashews are terrible.

Scandinavian:

you can get peanuts at most supermarkets for relatively low cost, they do however suck. this can be mitigated by putting on a chefs hat and lipping them around on a fryingpan and adding a bit of salt.

I'm not sure but it's like oreo cookies they made it something like 65% less sugar. I won't buy those cookies anymore. It's the same deal with the cheeto's they made it less fattening by reducing the cheese!

Finally a question that really matters! The chip section in my local supermarket is gigantic.  101 different types of chips and all (but one or two) are ordinary. The original Lays is the safest and most reliable but hardly  a great find. Indeed where are the cheese snacks in all their glorious forms...where are the salt and vinegar...where are the good tasting bbq chips...where are the corn chips?

Scandinavian:

on of the CarreFours here has Salt & Vinegar chips of British heritage in the imported food section. The price is just way way way too high. 30RMB for a medium size bag.
