Q: What's a tasty/safe brand of milk to buy in Beijing?

Yili's out of the question since their huge tainted milk schedule in 2008.

Are there any other local/reputable milk brands around?

I personally like Sanyuan (三元) milk, you can get it at Jenny Lou's April Gourmet and occasionally larger Chinese supermarkets for 16-22 RMB. As far as the milk scandal goes, Sanyuan appears to be the only one that wasn't implicated:

"On 26, September 2008 Beijing Sanyuan Foods Co Ltd[5] (SHA 600429) said its shares will be suspended from today pending an announcement related to a possible acquisition. Beijing Sanyuan is the only listed diary producer that has avoided being associated with China's milk contamination scandal."

I recommend just buying foreign imported milk from any large 'foreign' supermarket you can find.  Even if there's some Chinese brands that haven't gotten in trouble (sanyuan for example) is it really worth the risk.  Imported milk is more expensive of course but you can rest easy knowing the country it's from has higher health standards.

I've heard of too many cases of something supposedly being safe in China only to see later the company gets in trouble for unsafe products. Happened with a popular brand of bottled water I use to always buy, eventually it ended up getting pulled off shelves cause of the contamination's it had.

I'm just now recovered from a 4 day case of food poisoning. I think I got it from mcdonalds but no way to know for sure. I just heard that mcdonalds in China uses some sort of grease or oil that's banned in other countries. Always gotta be carefull with food/drinks in China imo.

A:Your potential employer is right! Demand for Medical exam before granting Z visa is to make sure, you won't be entering China in any abnormal and harmful to others condition.Few days after your arrival to China, you'll be required to complete another ME ... If ME in China will be OK, you'll get a Residence permit stamp into your book some 10-days afterwards. Imagine, you're an employer, who can sponsor my entry and work in China, but after my arrival to China, it would be found I carry some sickness, which would prevent Chinese .gov to issue a Residence permit. Rule is: Z visa should be converted into Residence permit in 30-days after arrival to China.    So, my advice is:"Complete ME in your home country and forward medical results to your employer".Z visa grant will follow shortly afterwards. Employer is not wrong at their demand for the pre-arrival ME from your home country hospital.   -- icnif77
