Q: Where's the best area to live in Beijing?

Just started working in Wudaokou, but people are telling me not to live there?

Depends on what you want.  I like yonghegong / dongzhimen.

Why?

I'm in my twenties, working, like going out on the weekends. I'm looking for convenience and people my age.

Basically all the reasons you listed. Plus, plenty of foreign markets, amazing restaurants, and the citys best nightlife.

Dont worry about transportation, that area has great subway access and the commute to Wudaokou is easy. Do buy a bike and go thru the hutongs at night, or go down Changan dajie, or find a good chuar place. Lots of things todo.

the best area to live is one near where you are working - saves the hassle of a public transport commute to and from work.

The last thing you want is to rely on public transport to and from work, especially when 1,000's of others are doing exactly the same.

a 15-30 minute walk is preferable any day to being stuck in the subway like a sardine prior to a full day of work, and then to face the same when tired and the other 'sardines' are equally tired is to be avoided IMO.

For me, a commute is not my biggest concern

Well then it would be helpful for you to add more to your question so people would be able to give a better informed answer.

Saying that people told you not to live in the Wudaokou district does not give other posters much to work with, and answering people piece-meal will just lead to frustration all round.

So please expand your question to include more background information.

You are working, but you are asking where to live other than the area where you are working, so how is commute not a concern?

That is just proof that this is not a real question.

Wudaokou is fine if you live around the Wudaokou subway station - ESPECIALLY if you want convenience, people your age, and bars (which I assume you like, because you're in your twenties and in wudaokou - don't deny it).

You won't find stores selling imported food products as easily (but you will find them) as you would in the Dongzhimen/Sanlitun/Guomao area, but at least you won't have to suffer through the hell that are Beijing's transportations in the morning. It seems fine now but give it a few weeks/months for your sanity to leave you, taking along both your children "patience" and "kindness". Trust me.

Or you could try to move to the northern part of the 2nd or 3rd ring. You'll be really close to the city center where the action is, without being too far from Wudaokou. I remember the area around the Hepingxiqiao subway station (where part of the French high school is) being quite nice.

It's kind of hard to guess what you want if you don't actually say it.
