If I have the choice of flying out of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou for much the same price, which one is the best choice, since I want to spend a few days sightseeing first?

Go to Beijing! They have the olympic stuff here, tianamen square and the great wall of China!
shanghai it is the 2nd best city in mainland china shenzhen is #1. great food great atmosphere. when i'm in shanghai i feel as if i'm in new york .
Beijing has stuff to see, but is very ugly. Shenzhen is cool and has HK right there, so you can see both.
To me, each city in China, first, second or third tiers, has its own good and bad points, and selecting one is quite suggestive, and probably different depending on your personal taste.
I myself dislike big, huge cities, here and abroad. To see endless rolls of cement and glasses is not my cup of tea, yet I grant you some buildings are just beautiful. Also, big crowds do bother me.
I do have been to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. One or two visits to each of them, but I do not look forward to returning soon. I rather visit smaller cities, villages, places of interest within the countryside, meeting their people and talking with them. I also will defer to my GF and her daughter's wishes of places to see. And we do try hard to find new places to visit that will be interesting to all three.
So, my advise to you will be to search on Internet places of interest or tourist attractions on any city you may want to visit, and select the one that will give you the most of whatever you are interested in during your trip.
Shanghai is boring. Not saying that because ive been here 4 years but theres seriously nothing to do other than shopping. Beijing has culture and history, Shanghai just has high rise buildings. Shenzhen is the same, its a new city so theres nothing there, unless you hop on over to HK.
