I'm not sure that I've ever seen a squash in China. Not that I'm particularly fond of them, but mom does make a pretty good squash casserole
TedDBayer:
I've seen squash, not as many varieties as home. I like to bake them and China is so barbaric, no ovens, boiled or fried just won't do.
JungleLife:
I actually see squash quite often where I am, and see it commonly used at restaurants too. I am not sure which one(s) it is called though.
cooter:
Man, all of you guys finding squash. I've never seen it in the supermarket or in any Chinese dish. Do they put it on their pizzas with the corn?
canned peas, canned carrots, canned corn, canned beets, canned asparagus (not sure I've seen asparagus in China)....canned beans, canned canned canned .....
ASPARAGUS !!! Grows wild in the dry, very dry, places at home.
TedDBayer:
canned tomatoes, or tomato sauce. I tried making some from the rock hard tomatoes, took all evening and was tasteless.
Lots of squash here in all varieties and shapes and colors. It is very, very reasonable.
Real sweet potatoes like at home are not available here -- the Chinese/Asian variety are light yellow instead of the nice deep orange shade that we have. The taste is similar but only similar.
Beets, real deep, deep red beets to make borscht with. Even when I show my Chinese friends translation of the word for beets in Chinese, they can read the word but have never seen the vegetable.
TedDBayer:
I saw beets once in a big market. I make borsht, Ukrainian.
I cannot find mustard from the mustard plant. Dang I am so frustrated.
Yea, whatever. I still can't find the mustard plant but I did find the barbeque sauce plant!
Schwingggg!!
Wow, there are so many,
Tony Blair, David Cameron, Ed Milliband, Boris Johnson, Ed Balls, in fact there are at least 600 in the houses of parliament alone and don't let me even start on the bankers.
