The Asian Cup is about to start and China have high hopes. Do you think they have a realistic chance of advancing to the 2nd round?
And any other observations/opinions?
If you're not barracking for China, then who?
I've just had 5 bucks on Australian to beat Kuwait this afternoon. Pretty short odds but, as my old Dad used to say, little fish are sweet.
Anyone over China.
laowaigentleman:
Yeah, they'll get all jingoed up if they do too well.
Thankfully as a kiwi, I find the "action" that occurs on the soccer field about as entertaining as watching a guy in the Waikato laying down new warratah fence posts to stop his sheep and dairy cows from wandering in front of a Fonterra truck.
royceH:
Oh I concur completely. Soccer might be fun to play (at least it was when I was 6) but it's as boring as buggery to watch.
But we're in China and there sure as hell isn't anything else going on.
Wow $5 ?!?! What will you do with all that money if you win?
Soccer
royceH:
Well as a matter of fact my brother refused to put it on for me. He said that even if he did, and then all-upped it into another and another, and they all won, then I could win $7.50 and he couldn't be bothered with that shit.
I told him thanks for nothing and how about he stop putting shit on us developing countries. Told him I had to work for 4 days to earn that much money and my intention was to buy some Danish beer with it.
And then I asked him how long was the proud history of his bastard country.
icnif77:
What about my sentence?
I really don't care about votes here. What it gets me going is (my) 'post without corrections'. And Native Englo complains.
bill8899:
Your sentence is prefect. You want us to grade you're riting nao?
I don't care about soccer, so I don't care who wins. I won't lose sleep over a bunch of retarded sports.
But if China won, we'd never hear the end of it... on second thought...
I'm rooting for Palestine and Iraq. I know they have long odds, but those two places could use something positive to rally around. But in the end, I'll pull for the Aussies.
what's a soccer?
- the ball used to play soccer.
actually it's called a football.
- no, footballs have a different shape...
oh, china's love/hate affair with idol USA defines language and reality, here. never before have i seen such widespread agreement that football (i refer to soccer by its actual name) is boring to watch. boxing beats american football if you want violent contact. or how about baseball for a jawstretching session (i.e. yawning)?
i was never much into football growing up, but my little country came 2nd twice in the world cup, and lost with tremendous dignity. i enjoyed last year's world cup a lot. too bad my t-shirt arrived on the day holland lost.
on the topic of being a good sport, why do americans convince one another that the world's most popular sport is boring to watch? would you rather people liked a sport that you stand a chance at winning? that's a bit silly, but understandable.
bill8899:
Soccer is boring. Baseball is also boring! I don't care what people like. The US is a long ways from winning a World Cup. they may never win it.
Hockey - now that's hella fun to play and watch. And rugby.
He shoots! He scores! Hey goalie, you suck! Damn, hockey is fun.
Soccer and baseball? I put them on to help me fall asleep.
royceH:
It's a toss up.... basketball is very boring too. And gridiron....holy hell, what's going on in that game? Not effing much!
coineineagh:
I've learned to appreciate football nowadays. It's a game with tactics and strategy, and Dutch trainers can be considered master strategists. A single goal can turn the tide for an underdog team, but it isn't that easy to get a fluke goal if you're not as strong as your opponent. Difficult but possible. Strong teams are rarely certain of victory until the final whistle sounds, so you drop the game if you drop the ball, so to speak. With most other sports, there are so many points scored, that you know who wins long before the final bell rings. I can't imagine anything truly unexpected happening in a basketball match that would cause you to jump off your chair in excitement; most of it is just big guys dashing across a small court, and you can barely see what happened. Same with hockey, American football and baseball. American sports are such big money, that they have become vital institutiions for universities and the like. You're not free to root for the team you like; it's like undermining your income source. That puts a damper on the enjoyment for sure.
bill8899:
So I guess we can all agree that we think the other country's sports are boring? Right?
OK! Good enough. So happy we sorted that out.
Now let's talk about something interesting. Like hot girls!
coineineagh:
Yes, aren't girls hot? And I like good music, not bad music. How about you? Food is tasty!!!
My observation or better Q is very general:
'why do they have only one ball?'
All players had to run after 1 pig-skin. They should give each player his (own) ball. Similar like when we were kids.
I asked same Q Scottish soccer (Celtic) fans in Florida, and I didn't get..... anymore free beer after that.
coineineagh:
yes, after such a comment, no more beer for you mate! you don't have to go home but you can't stay here.
icnif77:
Follow up Q: 'why are you all dressed in (Cetic's) team clothes? while watching the game on the pub's teli……is that 'tenacious'?
Zhong guo........how does it go......jia you!
They're on the march now.
China V Aust coming up in a few hours and I'm going to a place that sells expensive beer to watch it on a big screen. Going with a few Chinamen and a Yank and a Canuck.
What'll probably happen is Aust will win and the locals won't be bothered in the slightest because they have little or no faith in their home team. One mate described them as a bunch of busters. Hahahaha....I don't know what a buster is but it sounded pretty funny.
I hope it'll be a fast game with little rolling about on the ground. It's on in Brisbane, which is my hometown, so I'll be looking for some mates in the crowd.
Whoever wins, who cares....for me it'll be all about getting pissed and engaging with the locals.
Anyone else plan to watch the game?
