Q: Why are people out so late in China?

I'm a night owl, but at home the sidewalks are rolled up at 6pm, small town, forget getting gas after 9 or 10.

In China so many people are out at night, getting street food, eating in sidewalk restaurants. It is a little cooler at night but why are so many people out?

a lot of them have no freedom during daytime, think about the employees in the supermarkets etc. if they want to experience life they have to do it at night.

that being said, living in a city that has not public transportation after 2200, the city pretty much dies at about that time

frownIt's probably because they don't have a morning job or they don't have a job at all. It could be that they have night jobs and they work late. Some stores are open 24/7 you know. (Drunk!

He he, I said: "night"!

I've noticed that too, especially since summer has kicked in. The streets are alive with the sound of eating and drinking well into the night these days, and it seems just like part of life here. I think that's when the afternoon nap comes in handy.

Consumerism and habits. Some people want to go out and buy things just because they know it's available, not necessarily because they need it.

It can also be because of people's work and study habits. At the small snack/barbecue gardens on the sidewalks often have people eating there after they get off work. Many shops close after 10pm and (different types of) hair salons close after 1am.

Places like McDonald's or KFC often have students at night and they'll eventually grab something to eat/drink there while doing their homework or studying all night.

I am also a night owl and restaurants also close early back home. I find late night restaurants here very convenient when I am feeling hungry at night. We can't get dirty fake meat street barbecue with a cold formaldehyde beer at 3am back home, especially if it comes with laduzi when you wake up.

TedDBayer:

yes so many street food vendors out at night and the sidewalks fill up with tables and chairs as soon as it gets warm, it always makes me laugh to see adults eating on little kid furniture.

it is not just people out late at night. Students are online at night, due to the restrctive life they lead during the day.

the down side is that many students fall asleep in class.

i notice that many businesses close by 10.00pm, and many people consider this late. But the booming on-street night life seems to go on all night

There must be an awful lot of "wu maos" earned during the darkness hours what with these night eagles in the internet bars and online.

I think a big reason is most of them (at least in SZ) are migrant workers that live in shitty dirty tiny apartments with no AC or proper cooking utilities.

The last thing I would want to do is spend time at home if I were them.

Yes, I think this is one of the reasons. -  a Chinese comments.
