Actually majority of the employers in China they believe in racial discrimination, they always look for skin not for skills, no doubt that Indian ascent is bit difficult to understand but on the other hand Indians are intelligent people and as per my experience Indians are growing rapidly in different professional fields such as doctors, engineers and professors than any other nation.

Well I can tell you that in UK, 3 out of ten doctors are from India.

crimochina:

doctors are not english teachers. my doctor was korean. and your confusing general intelligence with english ability. put that intelligence to work and realize you are in china

Before I go on to answer your question I would like to say that I agree with some of  my fellow foreigners who mentioned about racial discrimination .Its cent percent true that Chinese care only for skin color that's why one shouldn't be surprised when  seeing Caucasians and some  other ethnicities teaching English in the most  weird accent.

My advice, make your CV presentable ,highlight your abilities ,qualifications and experience.

Apply for jobs in second or third tier cities...and keep trying

Best of luck for your job hunt.

I get that it is frustrating when the reality on the ground doesn't go your way.

But flip it around...why SHOULD the chinese have to hire indian nationals as teachers for english? I agree they have an irrational obsession with white skin. Same as african teachers (not black teachers from english speaking countries but people who genuinely hail from africa). And middle easterners.

I support anyone who can get a good job, no matter where they're from, and i'm not a teacher so i'm not worried about non native competition.

But China doesn't owe anybody a job. It's just a bit of irrational sillyness that has them providing jobs to pretty much every white native english speaker who wants one. But that doesn't HURT people from non native countries, it just doesn't help them.

I think the racial discrimination, that is hiring a russian guy who didn't go to college over a black american with a certified teaching history and a masters is terrible. THAT is an example of irrational, dsicriminatory bullshit that produces lower quality product.

But the Chinese have the right to set their labor laws for issuing work visas for english teachers at "College degree and from a native country". That's not an insane standard. Of course we can find examples of Pakistani teachers with great english teaching ability being passed over for 24 year old british chavs, but how should they set the hiring standards? At least at "college degree from a native country" the candidates are likely to be decently literate, well spoken people in english.

Whereas how would you set a standard for evaluating every Pakistani or African who wants to teach english? Do they have the resources to check the credentials of every single person who applies? Do they even have the abilitiy to effectively judge the language ability of candidates on a subjective basis? Probably not to both. What system could they possibly use to effectively screen out qualified teachers from the millions of applicants they'd get from countries where even 4-5K/mth would put you in the 95th percentile of earners if they opened up official easy recruitment from those countries? It's just not possible.

That being said, tons of people from these countries ARE able to get jobs teaching english, often legally. And that's great for them! Honestly! But the chinese aren't obligated to hire them in order to promote a sense of fairness and justice in the world. Hell, they aren't obligated to hire any of us for anything. But they do. I always think about that every time I see a post on how the Chinese are so racist and the reason is because they won't legally hire a non-native speaker for a job where the official requirements are that you be one. And i'm sure they are right that they are often the victims of racism here, but just because they are victims of racism does not also mean that they meet the requirements to be hired and issued a visa.

This is a 3 year old post, I am sure by now this guy is writing a software program or he is singing and dancing on Indian streets (as people in china believe we all do).

Today on my way to work, I shit you not! A girl (I never seen before) ran up to me and offered me a Inglish teaching job. I told her I'm from yindu, and NOT a teacher! I guess She was not one of the racists

Because Foreign Teachers are being hired for face, not teaching. No one expects the Foreign Teacher to teach anything, only to be friendly with students, get them used to being around foreigners and reinforce/review whatever the local English teachers already taught. So it doesn't matter what qualifications one has, only that he/she looks foreign and he/she is sort of an extrovert. The sooner you understand that, the more you will enjoy your job.

Now why White people above others? I run a recruiting agency, almost every schools and training centers out there ask us to hire Caucasian teachers. It's not that employers themselves are racist, it's the parents and students who don't want Indian, Black, Arab or Asian looking teachers, they will be less willing to pay as much money for a non-White teacher. In the Chinese mind, White people are being associated with prosperous Western countries and wealth, don't look any further.

In short, money talks.

expatlife26:

Hey is this Eorthisio on a new account?

Yeah I agree it just comes down to the money. Of course the employers would LOVE to be able to hire people from really poor countries and charge the same price. But the customers won't go for it.

What I think a lot of people miss, is that at a macro level ESL teaching is only a decent job because there is supposed to be a barrier to hiring only people from 5 countries which are all pretty rich.

If it WAS completely legal to hire and issue visas to nigerian and bengals as ESL teachers just based on their ability to speak english, than the salaries would drop immediately.

The people from these countries (who I am genuinely very happy for) who can sneak in making 10K+/mth can ONLY do that because it's hard for people like them to do it. The salary market rate is based on it being mostly americans, brits and canadians and having to pay enough to get them to come and stay over here.

If the market salary was based on bengals, nigerians and sri lankans, no fault of their own, the salaries would be 1.5-3K/mth at most.

Pakistan per capita GDP is <10K RMB per YEAR. Seriously. If any pakistani who could speak even a little english could get a job teaching ESL in china as easily as an american can, there would be millions trying to do so. Understandably so. But they wouldn't be making anywhere near what westerners do now.

It sucks, but that's just how economics works. It's yet another way the world is unfair to people from poor countries. But that's why they set the standard how they do it.

Yeah, my other account was banned probably because I told too harsh a truth about China and Chinese, or was it about the ESL industry? I can't remember.

You are totally right, another factor playing on high salaries in the ESL industry is supply and demand, the last outweigh the first by far and beyond in China.

Yes sir, there are not enough foreign teachers coming in to fill all the positions in China and the gap is widening because every tuhao wants to become a headmaster nowadays and they all want foreign teachers, every semester it happens and I can do nothing about it but advise the schools to raise their salary/benefits to attract foreigners.

Mostly places where no one will go like the freezing North East, middle-of-nowhere nongtown or worse in the countryside.

Trust me if I could I would fill these positions just so i can get my commission but I won't lie to candidates about the location even though I usually try to show the bright side.

As for the schools hiring Africans to cut salaries, I can find teachers for them no problem, but it never ends well because parents and students are the racists, these schools usually lose the two third of their students within a year when they swap Caucasian teachers for African teachers. As for me I got my commission so that's not my problem.

In reality the racial discrimination is still happening in English teaching industry. No doubt that, in many countries, not only in China, particular people are hired easily than others because the school wants to show favorable foreign faces to the customers (parents) in order to obtain popularity (which means more money), not the quality. In addition, requirement set up by Foreign Expert Bureau that an English Teacher should hold a passport from certain countries in order to obtain Foreign Expert Certificate and Work Visa (Z) can hold back the school to hire a foreign teacher from India because India is not included in the list of those countries.

Chinese people have  a misconception that "Native English speakers" have a better command over the language.

By this definition, anyone who is not an Asian, is qualified to be an English teacher in China !!

But they may not be aware that  the last "true Englishman" standing would be an Indian !!
