one foreigner did save a mother stabbed by her son in shanghai airport. but none chinese came near to help or offer some help. why is that ? what the basic reason of this attitude ?
I have asked many chinese this same question and I get the same answer every time. They are scared that if they help, something horrible with happen to them. If they help a woman being robbed, maybe the robbers friends are near by and will kill them. If they help an old lady who was hit by a car, maybe that old lady will blame them for the accident, and they will be held finacially responsible. Although this seems totally improbable, I think there must be some famous cases or something because people in different provinces have given me the same example. But I still get the feeling that these are just easy excuses to not do anything. People seems genuinly scared to stand up to anything ( not everyone! but usually ).
They don't wanna halp because it would draw attention to them. They are moar to be discrete. They are not scared, but they wont interfere into someone else's business.
I remember reading something about a woman who'd been stabbed to the throat in an airport. People huddled around but watched, and it took a foreigner to come and bandage her neck and call an ambulance before she was saved.
I know it's quite a source of shame (and loss of face for Chinese) but the reason may be because in these situations, it's happened before that when someone tries to help someone else, they end up getting sued for it. So the victim just accuses his or her helper to get more money.
Also, a lot of the time people don't have a freaking clue what to do, but that's still not an excuse.
and chinese make fun of the american legal system because of silly lawsuits, morons
Yeah, most people say it's because they don't want to be "responsible" for that person's well-being/ill fate.
The question remains, though: Does that mean that if you see someone getting stabbed, you would rather stand by and watch them die than maybe (probably not) go to jail, get sued, etc if you risk helping them..?
Rubbish!
I think any rational person will find living with themselves a pain in the butt after acting like that!
To the man who helped that lady:
Good on you, brother!
