Q: Why is the construction of new golf courses banned in China?

I heard this a while back, and then just saw it again on Wikipedia. Does anyone know why this is? Environmental protection? Bourgeois such and such?

“The first golf course in China opened in 1984, but by the end of 2009 there were roughly 600 in the country. For the last several years, development of new golf courses in China has been officially banned (with the exception of the island province of Hainan), but the number of courses has nonetheless tripled since 2004; the 'ban' has been easily evaded with the government's tacit approval simply by not mentioning golf in any development plans."

Space saving mostly. There's literally thousands of other things that could be put on that space that would be much more useful and another golf course.

China only has a few legal golf courses.  Of the 600 that are out there, roughly 500 are illegal (meaning they have no license for being a golf course.)

It's got to be about space, China's pretty pushed for space.

golf definitely is a  high price sport for chinese people, only the government leaders and rich men could afford it. since we are a socialism country,(at least we governors said that) . we should  put too much land sources on this entertainment activity

Limited space is one reason.  But the fact that the space would have previously been optimal for growing food is the real reason (arable land).  Lots of mouths to feed here.  Oh, and the water usage needed to keep a golf course green is pretty crazy, especially considering the overall fresh water shortage in China (on a per capita basis).

They are banned because golf courses take up to much space, doesn't bring in tons of money and it isn't the fastest growing sport in the world or in China. They would rather build homes, shopping malls or basketball courts here.

How much do golf courses cost? Years ago the Japanese were buying Canadian golf courses because they were cheaper than joining a Japanese golf club.
