There was the story a short while back about Chinese students dying in a car accident on the West coast of the U.S.. Papers reported they were in a BMW, so immediately the shitfest started here and people were openly gloating that this was justice. Turns out it was a second hand, and that the students weren't rich at all.
Why such hate for Chinese living abroad? Is it because they're considered cheaters? Or, worse, defectors?
Isn't that just envy, though? Wouldn't they ALL go abroad if they could?
There are some die hard nationalistic people who will brand as "traitors to the State" those who emigrate from China for any reason. But I do not feel all Chinese do think that way. It is a well known fact that in almost any country on Earth, the majorities are silent, and minorities do make all kinds of noises to make believe they are the majority of people.
In a way you could say it is envy, and also I would add it is probably due to getting the wrong information from their piers. Many Chinese think streets in USA are paved with gold bricks, money grows from trees and can be picked off the sidewalks, and if you land in America you will become a millionaire within a few months. And this is because they do have the correct information as far as salaries you can expect there, but equate that salary to their cost of living here, and dream of the inaccurate savings they could achieve.
I have tried hard to explain to a few close friends what life is really in good old USA. The fact that on each pay check, almost 35 % of your potential earnings are kept by the Government as taxes and other deductions, cost of renting or buying a home, plus taxes and insurance, cost of utilities, food, health care, etc.
When I tell them that I needed $ 6,000 US dollars per month to barely survive in USA, and with $ 1000 per month I do live a better quality life in China, no one believes me. They probably feel I am telling them lies. When I say that in Puerto Rico cost of electricity is 18 cents per KW-hr plus fuel surcharge, and every month my electric bill was around $ 500 US dollars, and here I pay about 300 yuan every two months, they smile but do not believe. Well, those emigrating will be up to a rude awakening too in a majority of cases.
Yes, you could be correct, maybe it is mostly envy that you could or dared, and I do not.

I agree with most of your comment, but it's easy to live on 6K USD/month in the US (that's 72K USD/year). That's a good salary by most standards. What's your monthly top hat and monocle budget?
Two supporting statements to back up Happy's comments. I also tell a lot of Chinese these things about America but they always just tell me to cheat the system, they have so and so family cheating the tax system all the time with no reprecussions, and my retort is maybe as an immigrant but not as a born and raised US citizen.
On the other front, a lot of the Chinese are completely loyalist to their country and the communist party they actually believe is a communist culture and government without thinking in reality that this country is by far a communist country or therer wouldn't be such a hugh gap between the rich and the poor
nevermid said "jealous" that part of right. the commons jealous those people who have ability to emigrate west countries. but a lot of chinese emigrants who money come from illegal business and bribes. especially those government relatives: the rich-son or rich-daughter or rich-mistresses. they like show off and don't know restrain themself. this phenomenon ignite commons angry
I'd put it down to jealousy mostly, tinged with a sense of unfairness; I don't think I know a Chinese person who wouldn't love to travel, work and live overseas for at least a while but it's really hard for a normal Chinese person to do.
