When I'm eating at KFC, they ask me if i want to biggest bucket, like it was natural. And I always go alone, because i can't find a boyfriend here. China the best country to find love if you have money? yeah right, i'm forever alone here. Even the ipad thing i've been reading on this forum doesn't work on men, or so it seems.
Everytime I walk down the street, when i pass by a mother and his child, the mom looks at me like I want to eat her child and grabs her child as if she wanted to take him/it away from him. I now stare at the child, but i have the bad habit of drooling when i stare at stuff, but do they really think foreigners cant make the difference between a moving child and a crispy drumstick? Is racism that rampant in China?
I would say that China is a good country to find 'love' (whether it's real or not is another question) if you have money and if you're a man. It's not so easy to be a woman laowai here.
Vergeture:
They say women come in all sizes, but chinese men dont seem to like the "queen-sized" menu. I was deceived by China's reputation...
mattaya:
The language of love is spanish everybody knows that and if you want to find love you won't have any trouble in a spanish country. They like all sizes! I do tend to think people can be picky here but this is not a spanish country. Go to spain or mexico and you won't have a problem finding a bf. A good way to solve the problem of the staring at you as if you want to eat them is rubbing your belly sticking out your tongue and patting your head at the same time.
I do not think it is racism at all, to me it is mostly that they are not exposed to foreigners much, hear all sort of funny tales about them, and when they see one, they are truly scared of them. Just smile at them, and eventually they will warm up to you. Be patient, deep down they are all nice persons, and do not touch or try to touch them at all until they are familiar with you. More so those from the country side.
Vergeture:
I try my best to smile at them, but then they think i find them tasty-looking.... or so it seems. I love the food, not the cook
freakboy:
Oh come on now China is the most xenophobic country in the world, they them selves all think they are better then everyone else it is in their history and their language, from calling them selves the Middle Kingdom to calling foreigner devils. Stop trying to put butter on everything you write.
HappyExPat:
Freakboy, please name one nationality who does not think they are better than others. It is not only Chinese, also Americans, British, Europeans, etc think they are the best and above all the rest. And I do not "butter up" my answers, I just give my opinion, which could differ from yours, that is no problem to me, is it to you ?. I tend to see positive things, I do not focus on negative points to lead a miserable life. And when I dislike a -place, I just pack up and move to another I like better. I still think it has nothing to do with racism, but with a "fear for the unknown" type of thing. Once they get to know you a little, they welcome you with open arms and are quite friendly. That is not typical of a racist society at all.
Try one, they're tasty! Even the bone marrow is delicious; the harder parts also make excellent stock for soups and stews.
Seriously, though, people stare here. If you're fat, thin, tall or small, blonde, brunette or ginger so long as you're white you'll get more attentive eyes pointed your way. And yes, a lot of Chinese are very racist, exactly the sort of a--holes you despise back home. Despise them here too!!
When confrounted with the unknown, most people stare. It really depends on where you are. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, etc.; it's not that big a deal. However, venture into the countryside, and that is another story entierly.
I'm in a second-tier city, and once I get off the main streets, I still get stared at quite a bit. I've learned to handle it in a few different ways, such as ignoring it, smiling after making eye contact, or staring back. Each situation is unique, but each response from me serves a purpose. Usually, I just ignore it.
On the "infant du jour" problem, I have found that my blue eyes cause a great deal of double-takes (along, of course, with my caucasian skin). Here, the problem is more complex. A reassuring smile is usually a persons best defense to disfuse the worrying mother. Unless one grabs the child's upper arm with kuaizi and makes chewing sounds...
Not mean to be offensive here....
One of my colleague who made one of my other colleage's kid run away all the time from her when company has activities together, once the kid looked at her pic and said she looks so ugly. Then I had a little talk with the mother. It's said kids eyes intends to enjoy things look "nice, beautiful, and warm" As you may already know all kids love colorful things.
This is a not very professional explaination.....I think the mom didnt think you look very beautiful blah blah, not sure if you weared the black clothes that day, many foreign women like black clothes.....
fish79:
Yes definitely “Black Clothes” that is the answer run out quickly now buy a yellow dress and you will be married in a week and all kids will love you.
mattaya:
It's all in the eyes of the beholder. The kid thought she looked ugly, but that doesn't mean someone else would think the same way.
Next time, stick out your tongue and make a silly face. You can get the combo of making the kid smile and freaking out the mom even more.
Because, we all came to China (except Localla, who was already here) because we like the food... don't we all like to eat Chinese? And, unlike a good curry or the left-over pizza in the fridge, it's much better fresh.
So, the obvious choice would be to eat their children - yes? "Looks like fresh Chinese is back on the menu, boys!!!" (pick the paraphrase!)
