Q: Why do many Chinese sites not work when using a VPN?

I've noticed, several times, that Chinese sites don't load at all or extremely slowly, when using a VPN. Anyone know why this is so? It's really annoying when you're browsing between foreign and Chinese sites at the same time.

Probably because the internet has just been slow lately. Even skype has problems and that site is supposed to be really quick!

Because you have a foreign I.P address and are coming into the Chinese 'Intranet' as sorts, so you gotta pass the filters and such.

Same thing applies when you have no VPN but browse foreign websites, becuase you're in their 'Intranet' so domestic sites will load like lightning.

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
