I have checked out a few new apartments and they all have this hideous inbuilt alter on which you mount your TV. It usually takes up a large part of a whole wall and some are just way over the top. I cant say I have seen similar in Australia. Is this just a China style thing as I would assume they copied it from somewhere.
In Canada we don't/won't have 'em either. Someone thinks this addition to the decor is "lovely" I guess. I can't think of any other reason to install such a useless, ridiculous, hideous and silly "alter".
TV god was basically it not too long ago. It was the first sign of this middle class that was making enough money to afford something like that. So of course it's China, if you can afford it, you have to gain the face for it by showing it off.
TV's not much of a face thing anymore but the "style" of TV stand has stuck around.
