"Always remember that people do things for a reason" - Nope.

"Go outside for some fresh air !" - Unless the air, the best days, is at the "dangerous" level.

"Be yourself" - Sure, but if you don't follow the advices of <insert random people from your gf's parents to the janitor>, you will hurt feelings, be a terrible person that don't respect culture. Your choice.

All the things I was told to bring with me. I could have come here with half of the baggage I brought.

"I'm sure lots of people speak English!"
"Respectful culture!"
"All the food will be great!"

Although I meet people who speak English, I like some food and meet some respectful people! It was generally bad advice.
