What was the worst advice that you received about China, prior to actually coming to China?
"Respect cultural differences."
They need a culture for me to respect it.
"Always remember that people do things for a reason" - Nope.
"Go outside for some fresh air !" - Unless the air, the best days, is at the "dangerous" level.
"Be yourself" - Sure, but if you don't follow the advices of <insert random people from your gf's parents to the janitor>, you will hurt feelings, be a terrible person that don't respect culture. Your choice.
"Go on a tourist visa then switch to a work visa when you get there“.
All the things I was told to bring with me. I could have come here with half of the baggage I brought.
You can make friends with locals who approach you on the street wanting to practice English
Come to China! It's so great! They really respect foreign talents here! Life is soooooo easy and cheap! Best lifestyle ever!
"Don't try to find a job yourself. There are plenty of agents that will do all the work for you, find the best deal for you and help make the transition to China easier".

Although I meet people who speak English, I like some food and meet some respectful people! It was generally bad advice.
Don't take many clothes you can buy cheap knockoff Armani clothes that look perfect and are of good quality.
Don't bother trying to find a place to live before hand, your employer will provide you with a place to live.
China is a fascinating country with loads of culture.
