Q: You ever had problems with other foreign teachers at your school?

Got some pretty bad cases at my school. One that won't talk to other foreigners at all (even when spoken to) because he wants to 'blend in with the Chinese', another who raves on about how glorious Mao and the Cultural Revolution was (to the point of making other Chinese uncomfortable), then there's the jealous one, who despises the senior English professors (who have higher degrees, preparing students to go to American universities) and won't talk to them because they make more money.

Uncomfortable political/racial rants that leave regular people feeling ill-at-ease? Being petty and antisocial over status and money? Sounds like he just's blending in with Chinese culture.

A long long time ago, I worked with this New Yorker guy who was always borrowing money from me (this is when I was still a good person, before China got to me) and never paying it back, and coming over all the time to drink my all beer. I'd try to politely imply that I had work the next day, and that I didn't like the heavy metal he was blaring from my computer at 1 AM (this is still when I was polite, and implied things). Anyway, one night he drunkenly confessed to me that he liked underage hookers and that he had a crush on one of his students (we were teaching kids at the time). I threw him out forcefully and he never came to work again. He never told anyone he was quitting, he just packed his things and left town. Creepy as heck.

Jnusb416:

Why did you continue to loan him money? Some woman where I used to work asked for a dollar. I let her have a dollar. A few days later, she asked for 2 dollars, and I didn't give her any. She hadn't paid me back, and she kept borrowing money from other people too. I knew she'd never pay me back.

kchur:

Up to that point in my life, my main human interactions consisted of:

1) People I knew in my small town, where things like lending money wasn't something you'd even think about.

2) A couple universities, where I mainly associated with students from the same department.

3) A couple jobs teaching rich businessmen database basics, etc. They never needed money.

I didn't realize that kind of camaraderie didn't exist in the real world. I was naive and sheltered.

Jeesh, Zootown, sounds like you work with some basket cases! There is only one other foreign teacher where I work, also American, and we actually get along great. We are about the same age, and share information about what works (and what doesn't) in class, share resources, and sometimes combine our classes for joint excercises.

I'm not sure how I would handle the above cases you mentioned, but it probably would not endear me to them, lol.

Ummm... I've worked with the alcoholic types... and the really bad teacher types, and a guy who was nicknamed as "Angry-" cos of his attitude...And they type that would be constantly hung-over and thus, cancel classes regularly. And someone who was clinically depressed, and cancelled classes... and one who needed meds (or other drugs) and who cancelled classes (and lied about going to classes... adn thus, got another teacher in trouble cos she didn't cover the class...). Oh, and a teacher who slept with one of his students... and a teacher who had a reputation with his female students (i believe he was a bit too touchy-feely, as well as looking up girls' skirts... and taking a few virginities!). He would also take students' mobile phones, and throw them out the window (from the 6th floor).

(yes, all of the above is true! And, in my first year or 2 here... all at the same place! No, they weren't all bad though Laughing out loud)

Now, I work with a couple of cool people, and while we don't hang out a lot outside of school, we do have a good laugh together while we're in school. Me and one of the others hang out a lot for lunch and all (the other guy is married, so he spends a lot of time with his wife when he's not teaching).

No, thankfully. The foreign staff where I work (all boys, but me) are all great and we get along.

I started off working with one guy I didn't like much, but he left pretty quickly. So far I've been very, very lucky.

I worked with a dick head who tried to get me fired because I went out one night, with some of my (adult) students and I got drunk. He accused me of being "unprofessional". Turned out he was the unprofessional one. No degree, no TEFL etc. and slept with 2 students. I enjoyed the day he was fired, especially as I was given the pleasure of telling him.

Ohhh yes, i've had problems; stood nose to nose, ready for blows (don't make that a gay reference Derek, please) with the DOS in one school, he was an abusive prick who had no place being put in the charge of young children, but the guy who followed him was worse; his interaction with the young students was highly inappropriate, bordering on sexual, and the formal complaint I made about him lead to his dismissal.
