Q: Are birth defects a bigger problem here?
Lots of the females in my office are having babies, which got me thinking about this question. Considering 1/3 of the food in China is not safe, and the heavy metals in the water, wouldn't more babies in China have birth defects than non-Chinese babies?

yes... which is really crap in combination with poor screening of pregnant women, that results in very late termination of pregnancies. My wife was offered to terminate at month 6 (or was it 7) for a thing that is easily fixable post birth, which later turned out to be a mis-diagnosis. The little guy is now a citizen of Scandinavia and have access to clean foods (until we return in a couple of months)

Proof that no one gives a damn about their job in China, even the medical staff. So why should foreigners working in China work their arses off and care? Just do the minimum to get by.
After a quick search, from various sources, both national and foreign, birth defects are on the raise. Even gouv. official mentioned the link with pollution. To answer your question : yes, and it seems to be known.
I sure they closed the "baby banks" in GZ and SZ because all the babies being left were disabled in some way or another. I assume that would include birth defects.
I suspect most deformed babies "die" at birth.

Yes. Lots of babies end up with slanty eyes.

Almost all hospitals offer special services. If a birth defect is detected during pregnancy the baby is aborted. If the defect is detected at birth then the baby is declared still born.
