Q: Are you married to a Tiger Mother?

My wife pushes our kids to perform their best
And since kids in Australia only spend 6 hours a day at school
Home study makes up any short fall
Every afternoon they do another 3 to 4 hours and about 1 hour every morning
Then there are the music lessons followed by drawing class on Saturday and more home study
My kids call the home study CLC
Chinese Learning Centre
I do feel sorry for the little buggers however they will have a big head start later on in life
Anybody else married a Tiger Mother?

By pushing ur kids like this sure they will perform better in school and get better grades, although ur taking away their childhood. A child who never enjoyed his/her childhood will hit a wall in life where they will regret growing up too early and u will see them doin stupid things cuz of  their miserable childhood. Let the kids be kids, let them play, make mistakes, and learn from them as u dont want them making these mistakes later in life.Push them now and then for sure, but ur killing the child inside them way too early.

This is classic chinese poverty consciousness, it is based on fear rather than love of life. To be brainwashed by well-meaning but fearful parents with poverty consciousness destroys a person's happiness for life, the brainwashing is so thorough it is next to impossible to deactivate. This is even worse for aggressive parents who view the world as a gladiators filled arena. Not that PRC is the only place on earth to find these gladiator psychos, the historic poverty and half a century plus of political indoctrination of communism produces the greatest number. Nine out of ten of those wumaos who argue irrationally, screaming and kicking until death without an iota of morality or common sense belong to this category.

Poverty consciousness...I like that. It's a good way to describe the mindset of many Chinese.

I am glad you see through this, poverty consciousness is a prime reason why the poor remains poor. The real danger is it gains momentum when one keeps feeding it.

My older son recently got his SAT scores: 2370/2400

That's a good score score which puts him in the running for any university, including the ivies. My husband's first question was, "where did you lose the 30 points?"

So, yes, he has some Tiger Dad tendencies. He does believe in balance, though, and encourages the kids to have a social life and participate in team sports.

Even he would think the extra 4-5 hours of home study was over the top.

earthizen:

I would answer it with, "I traded that 30 points for not having a nervous breakdown from a human invented test". And ask him, "Do you know how many versions Microsoft has with Windows?"

I am lucky.. my wife is not a tiger mum.

But lol, from what I have seen, the Chinese system seems to demand it of parents. Our daughters cousin is a year older and goes to a government kintergarten. The parents seem to get as much homework as the 4 year old kid. And there seems to be a parent evening every fortnight. For a 4 year old !!!!

From what I can make out, there seems to be a separation between play/ social interaction and education. "Sit down and learn" sort of stuff rather than combining play with learning. I mean outside of school of course and parent child interaction. Something along the lines of " I pay the teacher to teach so its their job, not mine".

Ha ha... Except when it comes to food of course. Go for a meal and the parents will be found at the fish tanks/ animal cages teaching their kids all about what tastes better Smile
