If you haven't heard, authorities are cracking down upon Muslims in Beijing because their delicious bbq's are "polluting the air" and "contributing to PM 2.5". This will have a big effect upon the Muslim community (and the rest of us bbq lovers) but I got to thinking: Don't Muslims have more of an impact on the capital? There's a huge community here, they have their own mosques - and yet they are invisible and hard to find unless they're standing behind a grill or associated food stall.
What impact do they have on Beijing? Or are they just synonimous with being service help in the food industry?
The "polluting the air" part is just a justification of what they are doing. The real reason is just to piss off the Muslim minority aka Uyghur people.
You must spend a good deal of your newspaper reading time perusing the Food Section pages. Try the front page. A recent bombing in BJ? T-square? Muslim connections? Now that was an "impact" upon Beijing that I'm sure the authorities do not wish to see repeated.
Muslims don't have a monopoly on street BBQ action. Everybody sets up a grill, sells their junk and makes a few extra bob. Well, maybe not everybody. Haven't seen any Hasidic Jews peddling kosher kebabs along the roadside yet...
Just for information, there are at least 2 kinds of Muslims, which culturally are quite distinct. You have the so-called Hui (from Ganxu, but you will find them a bit everywhere in lesser numbers), and you have the Uyghur (from Xingjiang). The Hui seems to be very loyalists. I remember a couple of them, by their own initiative, telling me they were Muslims but loyal to Beijing and "us are a peaceful bunch unlike those angry Uyghur". I never seen mixed Hui-Uighur communities. The Hui are indeed very very discreet.

Doc - Probably one of the most informative comments yet on this board in a long time. Thanks for that.
There is no such thing as Muslim People.
They are simply poor sods that have been brainwashed or indoctrinated at a young age to believe and base their life around shite,,,
I wish they were that hidden away in Australia yes I admit that I have little tolerance toward people that think I should change my ways because it is not in the book ,and that includes the Bible also
