Q: Do you know any Chinese person who is/was homeschooled?

It turns out that my g.f. was actually homeschooled. She told me not so long ago. Her parents sent her for a few years to primary school, and after many illnesses and fights with the teachers they pulled her out. After that, they just hired tutors to teach her at home. She has done pretty well for herself. She is self-employed has great marketable skills.  This is the first time I have ever heard of this in China. Education is the primary way of indoctrinating students to think and act in certain ways by the powers that be.

Never heard of this in China. I always thought most home schooling in the west by done on religious grounds. As a matter of interest, what are your gfs parents backgrounds? Are they professionals?

hi2u:

Homeschooling in America is increasing rapidly in part due to the inrush of immigrants from third world countries and fears over school shootings. Only schools in more gentrified neighborhoods are up to adequate levels.

I was joking dude. Just as you must have been joking about people being home schooled because they fear school shootings :)

ah ya, no I've seen people advocate homeschooling for that very reason, though the fear of spreading measles or other diseases from people who don't vaccinate their kids is another growing reason.

I just realised why someone would be home schooled in China... no houkou. Mayby the OPs gf is an additional child and the parents refused to pay the fine. If they dont pay the gine then no ID card and no school. As well as additional issues when it comes to getting married, ie, someone will have to pay the fine before marriage or even getting a passport. Just a thought.

My gf's parents only had her.  She is an only child with an i.d. and hukou. Her parents just hated the school system and decided to do it their own way. It worked.  My gf today makes more per month than both her parents.

Interesting. Its also interesting how you say she earns more than both her parents combined. Its a strange measure to use, especially in China where jobs tend to be gotten through contacts, and a lot of luck. Just trying to say, to describe her as a fantastic person would be a better measure of her education than how much money she earns :)

A: Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever
A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
