Q: Does it bother Caucasians morally to work at a job that you know doesn't hire non-Caucasians?
As many of us are English teachers in China, I'm sure the majority if not all have had to deal with the "send a photo" part of applying for a job. Many recruiters have blatantly told me this is to screen the race of the applicant, as if I couldn't figure that out myself. I know the overwhelming majority of the schools don't want to hire black people or people that "look Asian," as they like to say, but they have no problem hiring non-native speakers with terrible accents. No offense if that's you. I'm just wondering for any of you who are Caucasian and work at a school that you know wouldn't hire other races, does that bother you at all???
It bothers me. I think that it's wrong to hire someone based on their skin color. So many Chinese people don't understand that you can be non-Caucasian and still be British or American or Australian.
From my experience, it's mainly private language schools that hire "white faces", even if they have terrible English. It's ridiculous.

When I was younger I wanted to save the world. I was willing to put myself on the line to confront and challenge the great injustices of this world. With age comes apathy and a lowering of expectations for the rest of the human race.
I've met many people in this country that have displayed racism. When you are raised in a racially homogenous community then it is hardly a surprise that you would react in a hostile or unfriendly manner when encountering those of a different race.
I have also met many people from this country that aren't racist at all.

Definitely bothers me. I've refused to work for people who told me they didn't want black applicants.
This is part of the Chinese mindset of stereotyping, and conflating race and nationality, which I also dislike.
The overall cultural mindset is as follows:
White = American/Canadian/British/Australian = Excellent English Speaker
Black = African = Poor English (unless Obama)
Yellow = Asian = Not good at English/can only speak Chinese/Korean/Guizi hua
Brown = ???? Arab maybe? = Who knows what they speak, but it's not English
The idea that yellow people can be British, white people can be Asian, brown people can be American, black people can be French, etc. doesn't fit to the stereotype, nor does the idea that race has no bearing on language ability.
Not all Chinese think this way, but it is the cultural view (hence, why someone can "look Chinese" or "look foreign").
Any typically civilized and educated caucasian will be bothered by this " racist asian " phenomenon. I have a few good white friends and their faces usually go red when we discuss this issue, they dont like it, particularly the fact that they are being "pimped" because of their white skin...

No. I work for a school that only has Caucasian teachers at the moment (there was a western born Asian teacher for a time who didn't work out) and I don't feel guilty for working there.
It's nothing to do with the school's preference or them being prejudiced, it's the simple fact that the students and their parents have issues with an English teacher who isn't white. Sad but true. The school can't change that, I can't change that, why feel guilty for what someone else's society feels ? The school is running a business where putting students on chairs is how they survive, if you have a teacher who can't do that, for whatever reasons, then it's simple economics, you can't afford to keep them.

This is a true story that happened to me yesterday.
So I'm sitting down with my boss negotiating my contract. It appears they have been underpaying me for the past year according to my contract, but's that's another story.
She starts telling me that she is looking for 2 or 3 foreign employees and that she had interviewed a couple last week. An english guy and an american guy.
An excerpt of our conversation:
Of course I ask "Were they acceptable?"
She laughs and says "They were the wrong colour"
Of course I ask "Were they qualified and experienced?"
She giggles "Yes, they both have Masters degrees but they look like xyz. They are the wrong colour"
(xyz was an english guy of indian descent. He was a nice enough guy but quite incompetent so he got the bum's rush after a few months of total cock ups.)
I got a payrise and better conditions and all the underpayments returned to me. I'm sorry for those guys and me because we need some workers badly but it is impossible to cure institutionalised predjudice. I was left appalled....and continue to be overworked.
