I was taught four rules:
One: Don't ask questions. There is no such thing as right and wrong.
Two: Don't take an interest in people outside of work. There is no such thing as trust.
Three: Erase every trace. Come anonymous and leave nothing behind.
Four: Know when to get out. Just thinking about it means it's time. Before you lose your edge, before you become a target.

So, where's the question ? Posting as anonymous, it's just to troll around and stir controversy without getting flak in return ?
Yup, bad experiences for foreign workers are frequent, due to the "society with Chinese characteristics". However, it's not *always* the case. If you are really needed, with a skillset impossible to find in China or very expensive to import from abroad, then, you'll be likely be well treated. Two employers so far, I've been in excellent term with them, and they never tried to cheat me. This website have lots of good advice on how to negotiate your work contract. It's usually recommended to document yourself before going live somewhere you don't know.
Make 2 wechat accounts. One for your friends and family. The next one under a different name for Part Time jobs and for whatever.
Why should the rules for living here be any different from those in ones home country?
I think whoever gave you this advice was giving bad advice.
I have one rule, that I apply to every part of my life.
"Think for yourself, and make your own decisions about things"

I know I've heard these quotes before. Trying to remember.
