I take the bus, go out often , spend time amongst locals, I get to know people and talk about their experiences.
I've met many different types of expats.
Some who never really make friendships with locals (I guess they're tired of being used)
Some never take a bus only taxi to Metro and zExpat dives.
Some avoid probing questions
I'm the curious sort so I ask deep questions
When I met a brother and sister (American duo) who grew up in China and went to the state school, they told me about their teachers often referring to their being Waiguoren for various reasons and being laughhed at.. Ive talked to foreign teachers whose mixed kids went to public school (not the same school they or the mother worked at) and some echoed the same experiences but not all lived in the same cities.
Ask locals, bullying is rampent in Chinese schools, I've taught university for over 10 years, countless students have told me and this is why so many are insanely shy.
Don't hide from China's darkside

I get the bus. Amap is great for getting around by bus.
I have no choice but to spend time with locals. Since they closed the only hotel last year, everyone is local. Including me.
I have no idea what point you are making about public schools. My daugter has been picked on in the street for being mixed race. But never in her school.
In fact, I was out with her tonight, and after so many people saying hello to her, I said you must know 100 people. She said no, she knows 200 people.
Bullying. yup thats a worry. I have real problems explaining to her the difference between being positive and proactive, against being labeled a bully. I fear the latter is taking precidence.
I need buy a bamboo stick and teach her the Bible.
If I whip her with bamboo while quoting from the bible, will that save her from China's dark side?
diverdude1:
yes.
well, no guarantees, but it's a step in the right direction. A lashing teaches a kid strength. And that actions have repercussions. Bible teaches kid their Judeo-Christian heritage, which will help ground them and provide an anchor as they struggle to establish their personal identity in a land that will always view them as outsiders.ScotsAlan:
I think its illegal to smack kids in Scotland now. And anyway, my daughter is more likely to be a commie or a Buddhist rather than a Judeo Christian person. Integration and all that :-)
diverdude1:
yeah, I was just kidding about the lashing. To me paddle or belt is only on males. Females nope. Yeah, probably illegal in most countries by now. At least Westen ones....

I never take a bus. Don't have to. I can meet people anytime without having to be stuck in a body odor infested bus while being stared at the whole time. I only take taxis or didi's, or just drive my own car depending on where I'm going and time of day.
I only make relationships with Chinese people who can benefit me. And the odd time that one person who treats me like a person and not some sideshow. Anyone else is nothing to me.I'm never a dick to anyone..usually...but i pick and choose who I associate with.
Are mixed kids bullied? sure they will be, might not be so bad when they are little kids but when they get older they may experience it. Maybe not full on bullying but they will be reminded day after day that they are different. Just like every foreigner here.I don't think that's healthy for a kid.
Every day I'm either at work or at home. I don't go out anymore, not even to eat. Everything I need I can order online or buy from a store down the street.
Sitting in my room, waiting for death. At this point it’s all I have left to look forward to.
icnif77:
Human purpose isn't to destroy (death ...), but to create ( have left to look ...).
icnif77:
One can use ''can't'' very often ... 'I can't eat ..', 'sleep ...', 'wake-up ..', but it's no more than 'convenience' phrase ...,
mostly used by lazy, unproductive bumps!
i.e. "You can't annul 'my rule' with it!" or in other words, 'one CAN do many things as 'live healthy with chronic disease without MDs help ...' as one example ... what makes big difference between human and 'shoe' or 'chair' or 'banana' ... you Banana!
Spiderboenz:
Radiation exposure has left me completely sterile, therefore there is no way that I can actively create any new life.
Also, what with it being radiation, I also have the terrifying, incurable cancer that tends to go along with radiation exposure.
Explain how this makes me lazy, Borat.
icnif77:
My point wasn't ''what you got'', but 'what you can' or ''you are willing to do''! This applies to any condition you were or you might be in currently.
On the 'dying':
'Everybody dies!', i.e. it isn't such a 'special' event, except life ends.
No 'Borat' can help you (or explain it to you), unless you are willing to help yourself, first ...
It doesn't matter the condition you are presently facing. It only matters 'how you' and 'if you are willing to handle it'!
Did you know 'cat at fall always lands on its feet'?
You can 'translate' 'fall' to any unfortunate condition one human is facing ...
Treating it like a prison sentence. Counting down the days until I can get the fuck out. I spend my days ignoring all and sundry. Can't stand the staring, pointing, etc. Fuck this place, fuck the ignorant, selfish, users that inhabit it. 7 years out of the last 10 here. I have yet to find a person here who genuinely wanted to just hang out with me. Sick of it. Before you ask, still here because I have a wife and two kids. Trapped for the moment.

Start my Masters back home in October, Uni is giving me rein to come and go. So I get to spend about four months there over the next year. Then, when I graduate next October, I am a free man.
Spend all my days playing old school RPG online games and shutting the curtians.
