I had some Korean/Japanese classmates who would go every week and sometimes up to 8 hours at a time, and SOBER?! Have any of you gotten into the spirit and go all the time? I only go on special occasions like birthdays, farewells and people visiting China for the first time..
I go when there are no real bars nearby and the local shops have their refrigerators switched off because "it's winter".
KTV joints can be the only place to get a cold beer at times.
My repertoire is a bit limited unfortunately, but better for the locals to suffer my rendition of "I did it my way" than me having to suffer warm beer.

Yeah, I love to reach into a cooler for a warm water(or beer) that smells like a combination of rotting plastic and vomit.
Hotwater:
Yeah but have you ever given you all singing and dancing version of YMCA?
ScotsAlan:
Find me a country KTV bar with YMCA and I will buy you a beer.... in a country KTV bar.
Never now and never been a regular not even in my early days of a single man in China.
In case of need, a disco bar, as long as you can find one not booming crap music at 200dB, is definitely a better place.
basically never- handful of times in '06, '07. actually I disapprove of the KTV thing - far as I can tell it encourages/applauds bad behavior.
Never. KTV is depressing... always love songs (Chinese woman) or nationalistic weird type songs (Chinese men).
I haven't ever been to a KTV here. Not here in China anyway. The whole concept of KTV is mindboggling. Who wants to embarass themselves in public? The people who go to KTV bars must be so desperate for group approval, that they're willing to debase themselves just to entertain their peers. Is it enjoyment? Is it relaxation? And I agree that the type of songs available in the repertoire are very cheesy love songs, or just weird nationalistic group-psychosis. It seems approval and a sense of belonging is the main motivation, and perhaps the reassurance gives a form of enjoyment - relief from fear. It's kinda paradoxical how the 'cooluh' people in this country come across as cowardly dullards.

Every now and then one of my friends will organise a KTV night and we'll all go and it's actually quite fun. A room of people who are all your friends, a lot of booze, duets with your roommate, putting inhibitions aside for a few hours. I am a terrible singer but after a few drinks I will sing a couple of songs with friends. Not for recognition but because it's fun. I am REALLY bad so no one is every going to compliment me, but I don't give a sh*t.. I think your evaluation misses the mark, especially for someone who has never been. Try it at least once before you knock it in a huge rant.

I'd much prefer to use my time and money on things I truly like. I have no trouble conquering my inhibitions, but I'm sure it helps locals to de-clench their uptight a$$es!
I don't keep track, maybe I should? I guess I do the voluntary/mandatory KTV thing once or twice a year and they never fail to turn the volume up to 'Ears Bleeding'.
Hours of listening to the same song over and over, seeing people akwardly simulating a fun moment...
I'll pass.
Oh, really? It's actually different songs? Didn't notice.

When I've gone with students they looked bored even when they have arranged the outing.
