Q: Management problem needs help
There's some problem arising during my management.
I am the international sales manager leading a sales team. But I am a new manager who just worked here for a year, there are two old sales have been working here for many years. But recently I heard somone went to my boss and saying I am being too fierce. I am not happy that someone under me went to tell boss that.
Then again I start to recruit new sales with a demand of speaking English in a more American or British accent as I am thinking of exploring more in western market by telemarketing and visiting clients. The sales in my team have poor oral English, which doesn't match with my plan. Then a sales under me went to tell boss about my recruitment. The boss started to interfer my requirement for recruitment and told me accent is not important. But what made me mad is the sales complained about me to the higher authority. I think I have a reason to feel mad, isn't it? I don't mind if they come to me directly if they have diffrent opinion against my decision. They can try to persuade me to change my decision. If not, I suppose they should do what I said.
I don't know which sales did it but I don't like what she/he just did. How should I react in this situation? I am not very experienced in management.
There's a problem with the boss too, he likes to ask about me and other sales from other sales and other department. The sales under me and collegues in another department sometimes go to boss's office to talk about me.
I heard something bad about me but something good about me too.
You come on here asking all sorts of stupid questions about how to run your business, how to improve sales and how to manage staff. If you really have been given the managers job then the person that hired you is as stupid as you are. You are the "manager", you are meant to be able to do the job. You are not meant to come crying to us asking us to show you how to do your job. If you are not capable of doing the job, and clearly you are not, then maybe you should not have taken it. Although knowing what you are like you took it just to say I am now management. Well you got yourself into this now get yourself out of it. A manager is supposed to have enough experience and to be able to use their common sense, not go crying to a bunch of strangers on the internet saying help me how do I do my job. You really are pathetic.

Honestly. Managers get paid more than us plebs because they are supposed to be able to manage, a skill that not all people are cut out to do.
I know I would be a crap manager, and that is why I have never chased management positions.
Go study management. Seriously. You need to know how to balance your duty of care to your employees with your business targets. In most companies it will be impossible to satisfy both. A good manager will share the business targets with his/her staff, and share the benefits.
I have been in Engineering for almost 30 years now. And in all that time I reckon I have only had 3 exceptional bosses. All 3 ended up as directors. Real directors.
If you don't have the mojo to manage, you need to learn it if you can.

A smart manager knows that listening only to their immediate underlings will most likely get a lot of butt-licking.
A GOOD manager knows how to communicate!

Most bosses only want to hear good things (well, actually, ALL bosses only want to hear good things). But a GOOD boss knows s/he needs to hear the truth - the good, the bad and the ugly.
So, the managers tend to only tell the boss the good things, and not tell them the bad things!
Therefore, a smart bos communicates with ALL levels of their staff, and gets the opinions of everyone - not just those of the manager! And, so too should a good manager do the same!
After all, if the manager says "everything is great", but the staff are saying "we hate it here", there's going to be a HUGE problem!

A good boss doesn't ask about the manager's performance from the manager's underlings.
It will show no respect to the manager, cause conflict between the sales and the manager and also conflict between the manager and the boss. A smart boss trys to stop compliant from the underlings of the manager, otherwise he is encouraging more compliants and shows no trust to the appointed manager.Shining_brow:

Yesterday was a big celebration in China... but only for the CCP. (it's the one Chinese holiday I despise!) To show this celebration, they pull out the military - army, navy, airrforce - and say to the world "look how strong and powerful we are".
On Australia's national holiday for similar reasons, we go outside and have a bbq, play backyard cricket, go to the beach, enjoy ourselves (and, yes, this includes our politicians and military!)... and we say to the world "we are happy and love our lives and our country".
Which do you think is better?

a) I'm talking about a GOOD boss, with GOOD managers.
b) we also have unions! So, if there is a serious issue, there is a group that can handle it appropriately - not just fire the 'trouble-makers'.
Granted, I'm Aussie - and so we have a much greater sense of equality than many other places.

Hate to tell you, but the accent is not important but CLARITY is. As to going to your manager your workers are correct to petition someone over you. People do this all the time. The only way no one can go over your head is by you being your own boss.
