Q: Should we take it upon ourselves to record the past?

BHGAL lost a good friend today. His 95 year old grandpa in law.

Rest well grandpa. You deserve your peace.

BHGAL is understantably upset.

So many stories are being lost. The party wants these stories to evoporate into the ether.

I say we vote to record these stories.  We need to capture the hardships, the starvation and the political madness. We need to record the stories of the elders before they are swept under the carpet.

What say you? Can we set up some way to capture history? Before they are all gone.

Yes I am saddened with the loss of  a good man.

the chances of hearing his life story are next to nil......imagine living through what he has lived through in China.....  95 years of it.....  actually the family is saying 97 now... but my wifes birthday changes sometimes too.

I truly and honestly did and do admire Grampa....  amazing man.so full of life and so many SMILES!

I do wish that somebody would record some history.....  good luck getting the family to think back to them days.  I have an inkling of them, from family and friends...  but,  it is not talked about.... maybe we should all just look to the future. NO we must see the past!

Him and I could never "chat", but we did communicate ... I could see the happiness in his eyes when we were in the same room...just a happy man...  but, yes but, imagine, 1940, 1950,1960..........  and still nothing but SMILES.

My wife was born in 1966 and she new starvation, right to the mid 80's.

BHGAL:

so get your Chinese wife to tell you, write it down..... there are some pretty good stories out there.

Good idea, but how to implicate it?

Also, sorry BHGAL.  The loss of one, diminishes us all.

ScotsAlan:

This is the problem spider. Most people here want to forget the past... apart from the glorious bits of course.

Nothing wrong with keeping a diary or a journal.   Imagine all the money you could make by publishing it one day.

Why did it take you emotional stories from someone else to finally wake up?

I'm sorry for what happened but honestly this does not really concern anyone here. You want to "record those stories" to achieve what? The most you could achieve is get into trouble.

This is their game, they're better than you at the emotional angle.

And even if this could change anything, do you think this is the right way to do it?

ScotsAlan:

Good point RiriRiri. The bit about getting into trouble is noted. You are very correct. But, my point was not about changing anything, it is more of a family rememberence thing. My grandad, for example told us some of his war stories and tales of his younger days. My mum and dad told me stories from when they were young. This just does not seem to happen here. My MIL was a red guard in the 60s. But she has never told her kids anything about it....oh wait.... ahh... I see :)

RiriRiri is correct. Besides look at the fall of communism in Eastern Europe. The truth comes out once they lose power anyway.
