Listen, I'm not even anti-immigration,

But I have to ask what have you done to help with the refugee crisis? I realize you aren't in a position here to sponsor any refugees personally, but have you sent money to any relief organizations? You may well have, just making a point.

Seems like a lot of self-righteous NIMBY people with no skin in the game out there are condemning anybody who doesn't want to deal with assimilating a ton of refugees or immigrants as being some kind of traitor to humanity while doing nothing to help.

Easy to blast on Hungary because they refused entry to migrants, but how many of those people would like a refugee camp sent up next to their property?

Same as with the US, i'm from the northeast and it's easy for us to call people in the southwest dumb racist hicks for not wanting immigration, but that's because we're shielded from any of the issues up north.

Would you feel the same way about Scotland? How would you feel if Scotland had a very steady stream of people from a very different culture coming and setting up shop? Maybe that wouldn't upset you at all, but you can't look at the US and say "Immigration is your responsibility! But my homeland is different".

And the fact the US has historically had very open immigration policies was driven by underpopulation and a need for workers. It was a pragmatic policy couched as a moral one. It's not a suicide pact.

Btw I 100% agree that gun laws need to change. The vast majority of americans agree with us. Including NRA members to an extent. It's just a very vocal minority supported by the arms industry that make this look like a huge debate. Plus our politics is a joke. Smile

expatlife26:

remember too that open-border immigration fucks over the working class to the benefit of the establishment.

I don't have any reason to be anti-immigration because the places that my family and one day (fingers crossed) me actually live are protected by property values from getting refugee camps and ghettos of alientated unemployed from being anywhere near us. But we get the benefits of cheap labor.

Existing cheap labor on the other hand gets fucked. Try to unionize? Fuck off you're all fired and replaced with more desperate (hard working!) people.

Again, I am NOT anti-immigration. But the discussion is being framed as being anti-immigration makes you a racist by default, or that you're just stupid lazy redneck or xenophobe. And that's not true. TONS of people out there in our western countries have perfectly valid, self-interested reasons why it would be better for their families if the borders were closed.

But only rich people are allowed to advocate for their own self interest, right? They're just being winners and fighting for what's theres! Joe Blow working at the hardware store wants to stop endless expansion of the labor supply? Well he's just a racist redneck, fuck him I hope his family has to go on food stamps!

Since when was the 14th Amendment up for debate? Did I miss that day on CSPAN? Did you think that because Donald Trump said something about it?

Let me tell you something about US politics. There is no national Republican party. I know that that's not what it looks like, but its true. It's actually about four or five regional parties that are simultaneously opposed to  and supported by each other. There hasn't been a single unifying republican coalition since around 2006. Instead these small parties alternate between caucusing together for committee chairs then undermining each other when voting in Congress--and trust me, you'll see a master class in this if John Boenher passes a clean funding bill before he resigns at the end of the month--and cutting each other throats in primary elections before pooling their funds in general elections.

So that's why you see a lot of crazy stuff coming out of the GOP in Presidential and Mid-Term election years. They constantly have to play to a regional or ideological base to be successful in small elections, and that assures that they get smacked around like white trash Big Elections.

nzteacher80:

Very true. You can say a lot of bad things about GWB but it is somewhat impressive how he managed to coalesce the GOP into a semi-functioning beast. You've got a lot of different factions on the right in America. Black conservatives, Log Cabin (gay) Republicans, socially conservative working class, Evangelicals, Catholics, fiscal conservatives, the list goes on.

As a citizen of the world I don't want a Republican president. There isn't a world of difference between Republican and Democrat but I'd rather it not be a Republican.

The good thing about Trump is that he has won over the crazies but is alienating the centre. He may win the primaries but he is unelectable.

yeah you can tell who is really going to win the primary by watching who isn't saying stupid things in the early debates.

If somebody thinks they have staying power out to the general election they don't want to have to backpedal from dumb statements and crazy promises made early on.

These rounds are just about attention, trump is up in the polls because his name is on TV all the time.

mattsm84:

@NZ Well we should remember that that GOP coalition of Big Business Big-shots, social conservatives and white blue collar workers has been around since the 70s and won absolutely stunning landslides for Nixon and Reagan. It wasn't until the 90s and 00s that the demographics to change and the GOP began to lose pluralities of the vote to Clinton and Gore--lets call a spade a spade here,  Bush the Lesser was handed the victory in 2000 by a Supreme Court filled with people appointed by previous Republican Presidents. 2004 was the last time they were really able to make an honest run at the Presidency. Since then all the Democrats (really, just Obama) have had to do it not fuck up. Look at the 2012 election. Romney did as well if not better with many of the same demographics that allowed Reagan to win reelection in a landslide in 84, but lost by 100 electoral in 2016. After that, they turned on each other and that's what we're seeing now.

@Expat - You're right, but Trump, Fiorina and Carson are making the GOP field look really, really bad. Worse, it makes them look weak even within their own party. As I wrote to NZ above, a Republican nominee would have to be better than perfect to even stand a chance, and that Rubio, or Jeb Bush aren't catching fire in any way is a disaster for them. Why? Because it means that they aren't going to have any coats that GOP Gubernatorial, House, Senate, or State Legislature candidates are going to be able to ride. Hilary and the DNC are already looking down ticket. We're a year out, but the Dems make huge gains in the face of another GOP implosion next fall. We might even see the birth of a third party when all is said and done.

I prefer Yahoo as my search engine of choice - except that it doesn't open in a new tab :( Otherwise, they're about the same.
