I have an american friend who is married to a Chinese woman, and they have a baby together- I visited them with a Chinese friend, who told me that people of mixed heritage are much smarter than any other people and basically talked about them like they were this magical other race of people- do any of you have kids here? Do people react to them weirdly?
Have several mixed couple friends with babies.... and if you want to get a full display of ignorance and racism, then put a Chinese person in front of a mixed baby
Disclaimer: I use the word "mixed" only because OP did so. I KNOW there is only one race, the human race。
It becomes annoying on a BCD, but other days you don't notice it so much.
My wife gets annoyed by it more than me. She gets angry when an stranger asks if our daughter speaks English. " No", my wife says. "She can only speak a few words and that is Cantonese, she is only 2 after all".
The stranger will then say " Oh, you should only speak English to her so she learns it"
My wife will be getting angry at this point...." Why? Do you understand English? If she talks to you in English will you have a fecking clue what she is talking about? She lives in China FFS, how is she supposed to live here if she can't speak the language?"
Stranger:" But it is better if she speaks English"
My wife" Of feck off you stupid old bint. She is two years old. You are fifty and you can't say a single word of English"
And for some reason some Chinese seem to think that if their child plays with a mixed baby the ability to speak English will magically rub off on them. Not all of course, only some.
But I think those are the same Chinese that seem to think all foreigners are stupid beyond belief. You know the type. They are the ones that giggle if you say "bye bye".
"Why do they giggle when I say bye bye?", I ask.
"Oh, because they are surprised you speak Chinese".
ScotsAlan:
Ha ha yup Scan.
Her Cantonese is colourful when she is angry :-)
Not that I have a clue what she is saying. I have to rely on her describing the conversation to me.
