Everyday I refresh the Guangzhou job page to find that many employers update their ads, even though the other day they had 70 applicants apply then noticed they did it again the next day. I was lucky enough to get one respond back to me asking for a Skype interview, which I would not call an interview at all! She kept looking down and began to ask questions about my parents and where they were from. None of the questions were related to the job, infact she only asked like 2 questions and hung up. Im assuming their will be no more contact with me from her because Im asian looking even though I was born and raised in Australia.
How does one get a job here?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I've applied for everything almost relevant to my experience but noone will give me a chance because im not caucasian.

Welcome to the job hunting world for a non native (I assume you are of Asian descent). I've posted quite a fair bit on this subject. At the end of the day, you need to be patient. That's all there is to the game for non natives who look for teaching jobs. There are jobs out there for non natives.
cooter:
Born and raised in Australia....how is that a non-native English speaker?
louischuahm:
In China if you are not Caucasian, then you are regarded as non native, in that sense. No racist remarks intended, it's just a fact here. I have American born Chinese and African American friends here and they too face a tough time. Somehow, that's the perception. China Chinese can't figure how a Chinese or non Caucasian can speak quality English at native level.
Ya, I feel you man. I am from South Africa. So EVERYTIME I apply for a job the first thing they ask is for me to send them a picture. Which is their way of seeing if I'm white or not.
If you speak both languages fluently, be glad you're not limited to the ESL white face jobs. You can build a meaningful carreer, gain valuable experience, and won' t be singled out for your appearance.
angiidoll:
Yes I can speak both the languages fluently, but the only jobs ever posted here are teaching jobs or sales. I haven't come across one relevant to my experience, are their any other sites for foreigners to seek jobs?
coineineagh:
try searching for relevant companies yourself. go there meet them, and try to build a relationship. people get jobs through family and guanxi. if you want fair treatment, its better to play the game than rely on recruiters.
Koltenuka:
angiidoll, fr non teaching jobs go to the American chamber of commerce's website. their jobs board is combined with many others, and you can search by language requirements.
Before we start bashing the schools, should we not ask if the OP has the required qualifications to teach?
Could be the reason the OP only got 1 interview when 70 people applied. Maybe 20 of them were more qualified.
If I applied for a job along with another 70 people I would be surprised if I even got an interview.
To the OP, the jobs are there.... keep trying and good luck
I faced a similar issue when I started applying back in November because I am Black and Puerto Rican. But it really wasn't that serious, looking back in retrospect. I think the fact that I was American really helped, and also I was lucky enough to find a really cool boss who didn't care as along as I wasn't from Africa. I don't know if it's just my province, Shandong, but everyone here treats me really really well. Most of them think I'm African, and are surprised when I tell them that I am not, but even when they thought I was African, they were still very friendly, including my student's parents.
From what I heard, and also experienced myself, some areas not as open as others, but that does not mean you have to settle for some remote countryside to teach. This is what I did. I posted my resume and picture on eslteachersboard, and let the employers contact me. That way they knew upfront before even contacting me, that I was not white, and also knew my nationality and qualifications/experience. So I didn't have to waste my time with BS interviews. That is how my boss found me and everyday I am grateful I didn't have to settle for some shitty job in the countryside. Try Shandong as well if you are looking for friendly people Good Luck!

I'm not able to work outside of guangzhou due to personal reasons but if I could I definitely would make my search for a job also include outside of guangzhou.
Thank you for the site I will have a look at it :)
"She kept looking down and began to ask questions about my parents and where they were from."
Let me guess. "You look Asian. Are your parents American? Do they speak English? If you come here, and you are Asian, we do not pay the salary!" I got that, despite looking insanely white. Half of these recruiters need a bullet to the head for being so stupid.
WanderingTeacher:
Hulky..I keep seeing "bullet to the head" suggestions in your posts today lol. How's everything going?
Hulk:
Everything's fine. Nothing is wrong at all. A bullet to the head solves everything.
angiidoll:
Haha something similar. She was really confused about how my parents were from Taiwan but that I was born in Australia.
"Where is your father from? Where is your mother from?"
"Taiwan"
"So you're nationality is"
"Australian"
"Huh?"
"I was born and raised there"
"Ok" *looks at screen for about a minute"
"Ok we can talk on skype" *hangs up on me*
Wtf?! lol
And don't get me started on the emails she sent me before the skype call.
Anyway I decided to give up on job search at the moment!
