I bought my wife a diamond ring in HK about 6 years ago. Waste of time really because diamonds are not considered as special here. The wedding rings I bought in the UK. Neither of us wear our rings... too hot.

Not many people wear rings in China... look about.

BHGAL:

what a surprise.....  I really, reall,y really, wanted to get my wife a diamond ring, because that is what I know.

turns out she really could not give a shit.

I am pissed that i SPENT A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF MONEY ON A STUPID RING.

And mine too  is on the keyboard  ...I hate wearing the thing .

to hell with the ring.... give MOM a GOAT, or a PIG  or something of value. lb of gold might do it.

can't be a gold bar either...has to be something they can show off (wear) ...if it isn't wearable or can be shown off .... what the hell good is it anyway? and for in laws, not the wife-to-be.

It depends how much money do you want to spend. Compare that with at least 25% HK discount.

G train gets you to Shenzhen in 8h for some 1100 Rmb, second class one way.

I don't know anything about Bj precious metals/stones shopping.

Well I guess I should be heading to Hong Kong then Few guys told me about cai bai in Beijing that's why I was even considering checking it out. Thanks a lot mate.

Beijing products are priced for horny tuhao with more money than sense. Price differences for stuff like that can really add up. At worst, you get a free holiday to HK for your effort. Since you're just getting a 'ring for girl' not engagement or wedding ring, perhaps tuhao prices are suited to your income.

Don't do it. Coin is right... China jacks up the price on stuff for moronic tu hao.

Go to HK or even just make the trip to Taipei or Singapore. Why?

Cause plenty of tu hao go to Hong Kong too. That's where they buy up all their powdered milk and give birth to their children so their children can claim HK citizenship for the benefits (yup, even though the tu hao have millions... so what?)

Gold is cheaper in China. Jade... overpriced if you ask me... diamonds... don't do it.

earthizen:

Yup. Mainlanders go to HK to buy  all these things because they know fakes filled their market, including gold. Fake gold is very hard to tell with the naked eyes unless they are soooo poorly faked that even the color isn't golden (appearing greenish). Fake gold is made by mixing bronze into it so you are basically buying bronze (next to worthless relative to gold). Mainland is also famous for manufacturing fake jade, also for decades already. They use worthless jade like material, add coloration by immersing it in chemical solutions. Any color you want, haha. The rest is easy, fabricate any story to con prospects telling them how rare that piece is. You find these fake jade everywhere. Those in the know use ABC grade to classify them, A being real, B/C are fakes, C being worst, i.e. worthless 'dyed' rock. Also very difficult to tell with the naked eyes. Fooled plenty. I would never buy gold, jade, diamond, "antique" paintings, flower vase....etc. in PRC.

I agree. When you're buying a ring or diamond in China, you don't know what you're getting.
