Oh look. Someone is embarrassed, and is trying to save face by putting down foreigners.

Strawberry66:

Embarrassed? I am sure you havn't realized how childish you are.

I have nothing to be embarrassed, get a lot of people envy me.

I do not care about face, but this society just gave me a lot of face.

why are you calling hulk childish. You are throwing a tantrum because people said bad things about you in your last post. I find it confusing though. I thought your last post was supposed to annoy people.

Why do you tell us that you don't care about face and yet in the same sentence tell us how much face you have gained. You contradict yourself like this continually and then throw tantrums when we see right through it.

The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees U.S. citizenship to those born on its territory, provided the person is "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States. In March 2015, Federal agents conducted raids on a series of large-scale maternity tourism operations bringing thousands of Chinese women intent on giving their children American citizenship.

There are lots of jobs available in New Zealand and Australia. I came to see a whole new culture, but found a void. I also found a good woman who is worth waiting for. We'll be leaving next year. I've got a plan to get us as well as our two dogs back and into a nice three bedroom house covered by the savings I accumulated here almost solely due to the fact that there's nothing worth buying here. I could potentially be self employed in this town after a couple of years, meaning my costs of living will be low so I can put those savings onto the equity of my house, sell it and upgrade in about 5 years. If I buy a house here, I will be stuck with a deteriorating concrete bunker that'll be waiting for the bulldozers to boost local government GDP numbers.

My family are from the capital city and tell me the provinces are dreary places to live, but after living in highly polluted cities filled with people who don't teach their children to keep their voices down or even basic manners, whilst they charge aimlessly around the city in a car that'll take them 30 years to pay off, spitting on the ground while their kids shit on the street, a small Australian or NZ town is Shangri-la to me.

I grew up in a large Chinese American community, which I loved. I decided to travel a bit before graduate school, and quit my job (marketing research) to come here. I thought I could use my linguistics degree to teach ESL, learn Chinese, and be around people like those I grew up with (intelligent, hard working, generous).

I guess I was wrong on all three counts. ESL here is controlled by idiots who have more rmb signs in their eyes than words in their English vocabulary, it is hard to save my goal amount between the idiot tax, the thieving tax, and the poor quality tax. As I dislike the local culture...I don't have that much use for the language.

I'm not just saying this to tick Chinese people off; I am saying this because it is true. If I could do it over again, I would do JETS. I bet the Japanese wouldn't goof off with my passport, pay me late, or treat me like a clown while crying that their English hasn't gotten better.

laowaigentleman:

It's not too late to still do the JETS is it?

My friend did it for a year. He went to Okinawa. All the girls had a crush on him, but he couldn't tell them he was a pavilion end bowler and even though his lisp and mannerisms gave him away as a complete fire hazard, these folks had no idea.

He talks about it all the time, but he only did a year.

I'll never talk about my experiences here because it isn't interesting here, yet I've stayed for three years. Go figure...

I like reading your comments. It's real cathartic to hear the way you describe dealing with the locals and the people you work with as I have had exactly the same problems you have.

I majored in Engish literature, but I read a lot in my leisure time. I try to teach methods of language acquisition I read about in the field of linguistics. I made a model on the board on how to tell when to use much, many, a few, few, a little and little. I also put on an interactive puzzle so once they'd imbibed the model and worked on a few chunking exercises, they could play the game. Anyhow, a huge mob of loud boys ran to the computer and started trying to play the game, getting all of the questions wrong and causing the program to shut down when three of them grabbed for the mouse at once.

I just told them they could have away and next week I'll explain the theory with no more games. If they complain that it's boring, I'll tell them it's because their parents failed to housebreak them.

I could still do JETS...the problem is that, with the JETS program, you do not get to choose where you are placed. I could be placed in Tokyo and have to pay through the nose for basic living costs. I could be placed in some rural town and be the only Westerner there. Also, I think I would have to fly home and interview at the Japanese embassy at a certain point in time, which would just be a pain (also why I didn't do Princeton in Asia or Fulbright). ESL isn't really a calling for me, and in at most 2 years, I plan to be back in my country, slaving away in grad school. I would rather be on a beach in Vietnam, eating good food, enjoying good coffee, and spelunking. The Vietnamese have their own problem with screwyness sometimes (it's not as bad as China...even though many male colleagues who went to Vietnam are just precious about it. They felt that someone was trying to steal from them at every turn. I told them that this is life in China if you don't have a Chinese girlfriend to fight the cronies off for you), but the country is gorgeous. I like your posts, too--I think it is a misery loves company thing. We are both leaving, and don't care to diplomacize our feelings regarding why we gave up on China anymore. As for ESL--it does suck to pour your energy into your lesson planning for all the returns you get for it (students are unruly, employers just screw you over). China really is a depressing place, in that regard. I can't wait to care about something, again. My university students are hit or miss. During some classes, it is genuinely a pleasure to teach them. Other times, you plan an energetic lesson, and they don't want to learn before jumping into all the games. One of my colleagues has finally thrown in the towel with a particular class--they have to read the textbook out loud to him for the rest of the semester. Just like a Chinese teacher would do.

This is exactly how I see it, I learned one thing about China, never do you best, only the minimum to get by. China is not a meritocracy, better work less hard and go out for drinks with influent people to build guanxi, it will pay more (literally) on the long run. Young people here are the worst job hoppers I have ever encountered, many change job every few weeks. There is no reward to be gained working hard and for an extended length of time at one company in China, so why even bother.

I dunno if I could get a job in the US or not and I imagine I'll never find out.  I've lived in E/SE Asia a bit more than 25% of my life and feel like home here now.  I also have this weird idea that I, and everyone else, can live anywhere I want to live.  I mean that I don't figure I have to be a citizen to live there and sure don't need the locals permission/acceptance to live there. I have an idea... it's called... World Citizen.

*I tried citizen of the world, but I didn't like the acronym

so why do Chinese people go to my country New Zealand? is that because they cant get a job?

laowaigentleman:

Donghua Liu can't get a job in China now that his sponsor Bo Xilai is in the clink so he came to NZ and tried to buy a bottle of wine from the Labour Party for $30,000 in return for helping his visa application through more quickly. Damien O'Connor was his electoral MP at the time.

Since then he's been charged under the health and safety and resource management acts for negligence as a property he was developing in the north shore was having some drainage work done on it and he didn't want to pay for the barriers (worth $1,000) so he attempted to bribe the local council with $8,000. Genius.

Donghua is currently in court facing, you guessed it, domestic violence charges.

Millionaire visa programmes are completely daft, just like Donghua Liu, Chongqing's construction king who couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

The truth is, fewer and fewer westerners are coming to China. Same case for expats and tourists. This can be seen from the increasing percentage of expats recruiters reporting difficulties (in recruiting china expats). 2008 (19%), 2013(34%), and 2014(48%).  American Chamber of Commerce figures.

I am unemployed, pretty much useless and stranded in China. Enjoying every minute of it.

the chances of my working back home are slim,,,,, maybe site C Dam will go, someday soon, maybe. lots of work then, in sub zero temps and a local camp and city full of crackheads, drunks and whores. No thanks, I prefer to bide my time here, where the grass is greener every day.

It's better to be jobless and homeless in a western country than have a house and job in China. I'm not some sort economic immigrant, as you dumdums seem to be desperate to portray foreigners as.

No, it's most definitely you Chinese who get giddy over free stuff: childcare subsidy, free schools, unemployment benefits, healthcare… you're the ones gaming to abuse OUR social systems until they break. don't assume waiguore are in China to do the same. Foreigner bodies are different.

How many Chinese go abroad to study and work, vs. how many non-Chinese come to China for work and study Wink Foreigners in China are a tiny, tiny minority.

Because

* There are non-Chinese companies running businesses in China

* Young people feel like traveling and trying new things, such as living in Asia for a time.

* There are job offers for non-Chinese in China

Finding jobs abroad : depends on the country, your education level, your sector, and your will Tongue Jobs for foreigners in China are very, very specific and represents a tiny (as in, 0.0001% kind of tiny) of the workforce. Hardly a mass emigration to get jobs Tongue

In 2013 alone 9,000,000 people emigrated from China (according to UN numbers). There are a total of about 500,000 expats in China. (according to China)

And the question is ...

I used to think Vicky was the stupidest person on this forum. Now I see everyone who replied to this troll post is tied for that spot.

ironically, that now includes you. but i'd have to award you first place, for calling everyone stupid while simultaneously demonstrating your own. that's quite a feat.

It's not so simple - different people chase different opportunities.  My country offers many opportunities to people around the world ( I talked to a Ghanaian about why he was in China yet his first choice for living  was America, it boiled down to opportunity and values) China offers opportunity too, I find that it's strong point is education.  I'm in China because I would not do a masters degree in America - it'd be useful in terms of quality and recognition, but I want to branch out and be more diverse.  Different people chase different opportunities.

My Chinese wife and my Chinese Baby are off to the UK soon. I will stay here.

Fair deal?

One in, two out?

Not my wife's first visit of course. Of the last 10 years, she has probably spent 2.5 of them in the UK.

Vicky, it's not our fault.  I am here because my wife wants to be here.

Boom... a head explodes in Shanghai.
