I will strongly advise you not to use the debit card from your regular Chinese account for on line purchases at all.  With ID theft, and other existing scams, it is not wise to give others access to your money.

Back at home I had a prepaid credit card bought at Walgreens for this purpose only.  When a purchase was made, enough funds were deposited to...

There are two different words relating to this : 违法  and 违规

The first one refers to behaviors that violate laws. And the second refers to behaviors that violate regulations. Laws have to be passed by different levels of the China Congress (People's Representatives Conference ). Regulations are issued by bureau departments.

At one point I worked in Dalian for a year and my family lived in Wuhan.  I made a monthly 3 day trip to visit them and my wife and I had daily video Skype calls.  We got through it just fine.

Now... I am living in the US and my family is living in Guangzhou.  My wife and I have nightly Skype calls and my family is planning on making a trip out here this...

What you describe is the classic symptoms of having had some counterfeit beer/alcohol.

When drinking, drink canned beer (more difficult to copy than bottles)

Only drink what you open yourself

Don't leave your drink, if you need to, get a new one when you return

If you have a drivers license from some other country you most likely just need to:

    1. Get a health certificate done

    2. Have your passport translated

    3. Apply for a drivers license

    4. Pass the written test (computerized multiple choice test)

This will be less than 500RMB although price for taking the test is based on local prices here

    Hi airyk.

I try to stay away from any questions about "trolls", as I think they are usually a big waste of time that leads to a bunch of useless finger pointing and name calling... But at the same time, I'm getting pretty tired of the "core" users on this board constantly proclaiming that new users who show up and ask XYZ question are automatically Chinese wumao,...

Sorry to hear about the troubles you had but if you are looking for a teaching job then if you pick the right school and perhaps the right city you can do okay. My school provided the contract and they do all the legwork to get your Expert's certificate and visa. Also any other government beauracracy is handled by them. Your job is to teach. Makes sense.

Working in a smaller city and in...

I guess you could, but the process would be much more slower.

The fundamentals of any culture are forged during the childhood/adolescence and it is very hard to understand those experiences unless you have a very close relationship with a Chinese person that can explain it to you on a daily basis. Or unless you have lived in China since you were a kid, but I guess...

You can also tell if it is a government car by the license plate.  If the first character is a "0" then it is a government car.  If the first character is red, then it is military.  If the last character is red, then it is police.

But anyone can buy an A6.  The reason why you see so many government officials in A6s is because the cost of that vehicle is...

I had a couple of ladies - one older, one younger, knock on my apartment door one night.

They told my wife that they were representing Walmart and wanted to demonstrate the cleaning products that Walmart offered.

I asked my wife, "Do they have any Walmart I.D? Do you think that Walmart does such a thing?" Out went the two women.

    I...

This is a tricky question. I try to keep it on just to avoid catching a cold from the hoards of people coughing all over the place (don't know about pollution). However, it gets insanely hot on the subway, and the last thing you want to be doing is standing like sardines in full winterwear with a facemask on, so I usually end up taking it off, flu season be damned.

I always looked at my monthly pay, and set aside a certain percentage to be sent home (about 70 per cent), which I immediately thought of in dollars.

The leftover 'spending money' for the month, I would entirely think of in yuan.

To get married in China you do not need a residence permit.  What you need are certified copies, translated to Mandarin and notarized, that you are eligible to be married.

Or if you get any flack, just go to Hong Kong, where you get married just with your passport, np documents required.  Must go once to request ban appointment, then return on the date given to...

Not necessarily.  Your current visa will be canceled if and when a new one is issued.  But if you can not successfully get a new one because further documentation is required, under normal circumstances your existing visa will not be canceled.

But if for example, fraud is discovered in your application or documentation, then your current visa could be canceled too.

  • Jan 27,2013

If you're that worried about it, why not use an agent? No doubt more expensive, but it seems they have the connections to get around this issue.

I notice that they tend to say if you're denied F visa or similar, they they'll give you an L...

In my opinion, 'Maybe' is the King. It means whatever the speaker wants it to mean. It is perfectly vague. the listener is left to ponder what it means, distracting them from the matter at hand.

    'Maybe', communication's secret weapon!

  • Jan 25,2013

I would say extremely difficult to get one.  You must have a steady job and good income for over one year, have work permit and residence permit, and of course, anj account with the bank and some sort of credit record.

I gave up on getting one, I do use the debit card from a savings account instead.

I even tried to get a prepaid one, and Bank of...
