A number of reasons it could be.

    1. Being inconsiderate, they don't want anyone next to them and refuse to give you an inch of space to take the seat..

    2. If they are polite and let you into the seat next to them, they likely plan to get off at one of the next few stations, so they don't want to have to climb over people, if they don't have to.  Chinese people...

Unless your employer is providing you with an apartment, it is unlikely anyone will help you. Being "the responsible person" in China does not mean taking responsibility. As you may have noticed, anyone whose job is not dependent on their performance will not perform.

A related example. At my university, several of my students have told me the same story...

I've had that done. The sender put it in a sealed envelope inside a book in a way that I would be able to tell if it had been opened. The credit card would not be usable in any case until it was activated through netbank, so only risk would be if it had been opened, it should never be activated.

If they don't get marketing deals I think they're pretty much F'ed, since they've spent their whole lives training for one thing and have few other skills.

    Here's the homeless story btw:

I do, but then again, I work in a really laid back training center where I personally know all the students. I think its different for those in larger cities where there are much more students and teachers.

As long as Im teaching at the same level they expect no one cares, and the students appreciate the relaxed atmosphere. If I were slipping in how I conducted class, im sure I would be...

Firstly no repellant is 100% effective for everyone all the time.

However, in my previous career I was advised by some VERY experienced people that natural garlic works best, eat a large raw clove or 4 every day, or if you cannot take the taste you can purchase natural garlic capsules, this then works it's way through your system and is released in microscopic...

    Hi,

Ive been here for a year and have been drinking pretty much every day to kill the boredom etc and unwind after a long day.

I recommend you read ´the easy way to control alcohol,´ by Allen Carr. Im reading it at the moment and its great. It explains alcohol addiction, and why people drink beer. I read his book about smoking and quit over 2 years ago...

    What means: 'p.s.'?

  • May 08,2013

I've seen the last letter of my surname being cut of on plane tickets and accents or special characters normalized. The airlines are probably OK with this (please check up on if this is actually a fact prior to going to the airport), but you are communicating with a person who thinks she will lose her job if she makes a mistake. Try to call the airline directly and ask how to go about this, or...

I asked my bother in law last year, when it seemed that I would be spending some time in japan. he is Japanese-American.

Table manners are of extreme importance!

Never EVER so much as touch  your nose at the table. Sniffle, nose blowing etc. will be treated as if you had pooped at the table.

When you enter a bar, the bartender may point to where you should sit. It is...

If you have already washed your stained clothes, and the stains did not come out, it will be harder to remove them now.  Do not ask me why, I just do not know why, but do not give up yet.

Take one as a trial, soak the stain immediate area in hot water, pour some liquid clothes detergent over the stain, and let it soak for about 30 minutes. Then, with your hands, wash the stain...

For a written notice, which I believe might pertain to me, I will take a photo with my phone, and then send it to my gf via Weixin.  She lets me know if it's important or not, and what to expect or what needs to be done.  I've never had any random strangers that come knocking on my door, and certainly wouldn't just let them enter my residence....

I find service appalling in the so-called fancier restaurants as well. The only difference between the cheap restaurants and the expensive restaurants in China is that generally the expensive ones always leaves me disappointed, as I think the food taste/quality isn't better than the cheap places.

It's of course a general problem not just in restaurants.

    If it will...

If you are in a city with other expats, there are bound to be some expat bars to hang out in. I was never a real "bar" person in the US, but in China it was the one place I could go and have a conversation with other native English speakers.  That helped my homesickness a lot.

Other tricks are to keep yourself busy.  Find a hobby, get our and explore.  Join...

For me, it is more difficult since I am the guy in the relationship.  My wife makes a lot of the day-to-day decisions on how to raise our kids.  And since my mother-in-law lives with us, she has a lot of say in it as well.

However, there are certain things I insist on and that is when I put my foot down.  Like you, independence is very important to me....

Top 5 Faves (will try and do least five later)

1: Beijing on a non-polluted day. Despite the messiness of the city planning, a sunny afternoon in the Gulou area is something I will truly miss if I leave.

2: Liuzhou: Great fun and locals always up for some antics

3: Yangshuo: Apart from the ultra-tourism the surrounding area is...

Maybe. I'm not quite sure if there's any help other than the desire to do better for your family. This is China, where getting drunk is celebrated, though most people have jobs to keep busy so they can't drink all day.

You could try asking around in hospitals for detox programs. Keep in mind you can die from delerium tremens (see...

I believe so many of you have heard about the downside of Chinese girls, how materialistic they are and how dishonest they can be. Guys, I feel extremely sorry for this, yet you just have bad luck. If I'm asked this question, my answer will be LOVE. I know, you may say I'm just lying. Ok, let's don't talk about me here then. I use my girl friends as examples.

Yeah it's fairly easy. You just approach the bar or venue where you want to perform and ask if they have an open slot for your band (usually you need to gove them about 6 weeks notice as most organized bars will arrange their event schedule at least a month in advance). Many places will be willing to let you perform as the opening act together with a few other more established bands. However,...

This whole "western media hating on China" or "Chinese media hating on the west" phenomenon is why I'm so intrigued by the future direction of social media and its influence on the mainstream sources. I sincerely hope that it will have a balancing effect on news media slant on both sides.

While it's not perfect yet, I'm also a big fan of news aggregate services like...

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
