You can take a Chinese out of China, but you can`t take away my yearning to be amonst the chaos and madness of their country, the place I now feel is my home Smile

Anywhere else would be downright boring.

Youtube is great to kill boredom and/or gloom. I've my favorite channels, it's also my jukebox and a way to find new music. Watching my favorite movie scenes is great too.

Wikipedia, I love reading about completely lost places (islands or just really remote places), lives of obscure yet interesting people, the story of that mushroom or that obscure sea animal, etc.

I don't live in Guangzhou, so I don't know much about the situation. It sounds like that (at least) having two classes of Chinese citizens became accepted, not only de-facto, but now legally ? So much for communism, Animal Farm all the way long.

Have never had a problem with the small money issue whether local vendor or taxi, they will either round the figure up or down.  In the end, it winds up always being equal in the long run.  Don't sweat it.

your second issue, get some balls, tell mil to go dance in the square and toss her boxes and make yourself comfortable

    Hi Everyone

Please remember that there are rules to the forum - posts that include racial slurs will not be tolerated, for obvious reasons, neither will profane content as this is a public space and it has to be safe for everyone to use.

Crimochina, your last question was clearly sarcastically aimed at another user, and Admincat will also not...

I have a dog (Casper) - has been the light of my life ever since we got him

If you are in Beijing, you can try to adopt from http://lingyangxiaopu.com/

If you do get a dog, please remember that saving a dog won't change the world.

But for the dog, the world changes forever

Shorter breath after running during polluted days, yes. And the day after, spitting infected mucus, with a bad throat. No headaches. It started about one year ago (two years after my arrival), when pm2.5 >= 150 in Suzhou became the norm. Nowadays, my throat feels like when I was smocking. But I stopped smocking a few years ago.

For a time, I solved this by not running...

No, I make big bucks with my own business and also have a high paying job that I like. I have a lovely and very beautiful Chinese girlfriend (yes even by Chinese standards), dedicated to our couple, not greedy, not superficial (she studied in the UK long enough to learn about the substance of things and open her eyes about how superficial most people are in China), a great cook (and not only...

The reason why is that once you are over 60 years of age, the mandatory health insurance can not cover you, so you can not work without it, and no work permit or work visa.

But I do know a case of an 87 years old retired teacher who has continued working legally by paying thru the nose for his own health insurance. It took a lot of paperwork to do it, but he got the work permit and...

    Here's some from me..

Behaviors: Keep doors and windows shut and seal them. Have a spare blanket on the bed and another on your sofa to throw over, and cuddle up to anything warm (person, pet, hot water bottle). Stay as active as possible, without getting to a sweat. Drink hot soup. Take your annual holiday somewhere warm if you can. Bring your (portable) cook-top...

Racism, by definition, it's discrimination based on the perceived notion of race. Example of discrimination based on race "Here, we won't serve Eskimos", or "This beach is reserved to white people". I don't think Chinese see races amongst themselves, but they definitely discriminate between each other based on provinces, exterior signs of wealth, etc... So I would reformulate...

When I got my licence I paid an agent to arrange it as I didn't have the right visa at the time. I sat in an exam room of only foreigners. The test was set in English to look like I'd done it. I sat in front of the computer/webcam for one hour & did nothing. Two Chinese guys ran from PC to PC, crouching down our of sight while using the mouse to answer half the questions. Once...

I reckon that there is a problem with overpopulation, but also an issue with this population focusing on the Eastern regions.

However, right now there is a bigger problem as the share of the population that is older and retired is going to increase to a point where it will be hard for the younger generation to support/fund those who aren't contributing to the economy...

Kids are not exactly encouraged to be out-going by their up-bringing, so yeah, they are ripe for being glued on a phone and messaging rather than real-life interactions.

For your fiance, that will be hard. You can try to organize common activities, things as simple as biking around a nice place, jogging, things like that. Back home, finding nice places for afternoon-long...

Just in case anyone was wondering, I got her a nice dinner (which seems to go across well for anyone regardless of hobbies), and a fixie bike that she said that she wanted! She loved it. And I got her another present of me starting Chinese classes so I can learn to communicate with her parents ...

Last year i had a class of imaginative and creative students - it was great.

One discussion involved the students coming up with hypothetical solutions to different scenarios, some serious, some not so serious: "What if...........?"

They were great in pushing the questions to their limits

    I posed the question:

"what if there was no electricity?"

    after...
